Qualitative Forest Quality Assessment Through Local Knowledge Integration and Co-Creation
Forest ecosystems in many low-income tropical countries experience high rates of degradation. Often, remote sensing and forest surveys are used to assess the degradation, neglecting local knowledge in the evaluation and management responses. In this study, we integrate scientific and local knowledge to co-create customized indicators for qualitatively plumb forests and identify suitable management strategies. We used the Drivers-Pressures-Stresso…
Integrating participatory GIS, remote sensing, and explainable machine learning to assess forest provisioning services
Forests play a vital role in supporting rural livelihoods by providing essential resources such as food, fuelwood, and medicine. Ensuring the sustainable utilization of these resources while balancing environmental protection requires a data-driven approach that integrates advanced technologies and local knowledge to inform forest management. This study synthesizes data from Participatory Geographic Information System (PGIS) of 66 forest plots an…
Considerations for enhancing participation and data accuracy in geospatial research in rural areas
Rural environments are experiencing rapid changes that must be explored to understand, enhance, and facilitate positive changes and adapt to detrimental changes. However, the information researchers can obtain about the environment to identify effective management strategies for rural resources is hindered by several factors. Participatory geospatial research presents an approach that integrates local voices to map the facts and values of rural p…
Forests and cycles of agrarian sustenance
In Savanna ecosystems, cycles of sustenance include periods of food abundance and deficits. In rain-fed agricultural systems, forests are a vital food source that helps households close this cycle. This paper uses cross-sectional data to explore the association between provisioning ecosystem services and timing to food insecurity in forest fringe communities (N = 500). The time to food insecurity analysis revealed a significant difference in the …
Ecosystem service demand and supply dynamics under different farming systems
Tacit Evasion or a Misplaced Policy Gaze
Although banned in many countries, charcoal production remains a key driver of deforestation in Africa, yet a livelihood source for many, with evidence showing the practice has risen to unprecedented levels. While rural poverty is often framed as the driver, the rise in charcoal consumption among a burgeoning urban population suggests a multiplicity of drivers. Using in-depth interviews with diverse stakeholders in Malawi, this paper examined the…
A Geospatial Approach to Assessing the Impact of Agroecological Knowledge and Practice on Crop Health in a Smallholder Agricultural Context
In the context of food insecurity in resource-poor settings, agroecology (AE) has emerged as an important approach promoted for improving crop productivity, yet few studies have demonstrated how a combination of agroecological methods can improve crop health and thereby crop productivity. Using a geospatial approach, this study investigated whether agroecological practices can improve crop health in smallholder contexts. We compared leaf area ind…
Built-up area expansion in the Wa Municipality of Ghana
This study draws on the patch-mosaic model and uses geospatial and statistical methods to assess vegetation fragmentation specifically from built-up area expansion between 1990 and 2018 in the Wa Municipality of Ghana. The study finds that 0.19% and 0.33% annual expansion in the built-up area from 1990-2006 and 2006-2018 contributed to annual vegetation patch size variability (coefficient of variation in the patch size) of 1.82% and 120.97% from …
Assessing local perceptions of deforestation, forest restoration, and the role of agroecology for agroecosystem restoration in northern Malawi
Deforestation drives climate change and reinforces food insecurity in forest‐dependent communities. What drives deforestation varies by location and is shaped by livelihood systems. But how locals perceive restoration is crucial for developing restoration policies. Evidence suggests that applying sustainable farming strategies can potentially restore forests and sustain livelihoods. Applying a broad‐based conceptualization of deforestation and re…
Human and social values in agroecology
Addressing human and social values is a core element of agroecology, including questions of equity and social justice in food systems, supporting autonomy and well-being of food producers, fostering meaningful, dignified forms of food systems work, and reshaping ways of interacting with nonhuman species and ecosystems. In this article, we review peer-reviewed literature related to human and social values in agroecology. We identified a growing so…
Exploring the drivers of herbicide use and risk perception among smallholder farmers in Ghana
Although herbicide adoption is gaining popularity among farmers in the Global South, the reasons for their adoption and perceptions of the impacts of their use may vary. Drawing theoretical insights from political ecology and using photovoice and interviews with (N = 48) backyard farmers in the semi-arid savannah region of Ghana, this article explored the underlying factors shaping herbicide adoption and the perceived health and environmental imp…
The Rise of the Fourth Estate
Amid increasing climate change and environmental degradation, illegal mining (galamsey) has received widespread public concern in Ghana, with greater attention in recent times due to increased media coverage. This paper explores the role of the media in the ongoing crackdown on galamsey activities through a Media Agenda-setting theoretical lens. Media reportage on galamsey between January 2017 and March 2018 was analyzed using textual analysis. W…
Analysing patterns of forest cover change and related land uses in the Tano-Offin forest reserve in Ghana
Forest cover change is a major contributing factor to global environmental change. Whereas several studies have focused on the general land use and land cover dynamics, we focus on analysing forest cover change patterns in a protected landscape taking into consideration how other land categories are increasing at the expense of the forest. In this study, we analyse forest cover change patterns and associated proximate land use factors between 198…
Antenatal care utilization in the fragile and conflict-affected context of the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Traditional agriculture in transition
Following the renewed effort at achieving a new green revolution for Africa, emphasis has been placed on modernizing smallholder agriculture through the deployment of improved inputs especially mechanized technologies. In Ghana, the government has in the last decade emphasized the provision of subsidized mechanized ploughing services to farmers alongside a rapidly growing private sector tractor service market. While mechanized technology adoption…
After the flames then what? exploring the linkages between wildfires and household food security in the northern Savannah of Ghana
This study deploys the livelihoods theory in political ecology together with integrated methods including remote sensing, participatory geographic information systems, interviews and focus group discussions to explore the intricate and dynamic linkages between perennial wildfires and household food insecurity among smallholder farmers in the northern savannah zone of Ghana. Our results suggest that wildfires are a major pathway to household food …
Mapping burnt areas in the semi-arid savannahs
A geospatial approach to assessing land change in the built-up landscape of Wa Municipality of Ghana
Urban landscapes are changing in response to changes in socio-economic conditions. Land change scientists seek to understand these land dynamics in the coupled human-environment system of urban landscapes. This study assessed land change in the built-up area of Wa Municipality between 1986 and 2016 using Landsat images. We used the Support Vector Machine algorithm for classifying the images. We recorded image classification accuracies of 97%, 95%…
Spatio-temporal disparities in maternal health service utilization in Rwanda
