  • Wari Monumental Architecture: State Canons, Public Rituals, and Local Encounters in Huaro, Cusco

Véronique Bélisle, Hubert Zuayer•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2026•References: 48

Although state expansion has often been understood in terms of violence, recent research has emphasized the importance of the development of alliances between state personnel and local populations. In Peru, the presence of Wari colonists is well documented in the Cusco region during the Middle Horizon. Excavations at Wari installations demonstrated the strong Wari identity of its occupants, but the types of encounters that the Wari had with local…

  • Settlement discontinuity at Ak'awillay and the development of the Inca imperial capital region

Open Access•R Alan Covey, Kylie E Quave et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2025•References: 22

Radiocarbon dates can offer important corollaries for historic events and processes, including territorial expansion and consolidation in early empires. Eighteen new radiocarbon dates from test excavations at Ak'awillay, near the Inca imperial capital of Cuzco, reveal new perspectives on interactions between the Incas and Xaquixaguana Valley groups. Rather than persisting as a regional centre, Ak'awillay declined well before early Inca expansion,…

  • Bone and antler artifact use in the 1st millennium CE of Cusco, Peru: Insights on textile production and food processing from the site of Ak'awillay

    Open Access•Aleksa K Alaica, Véronique Bélisle•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2023

There is a long history in the use of osseous materials from some of the earliest contexts of the Andes, yet most technology studies have focused on durable materials of ceramic, metal, and stone. In this paper, we present evidence for the continual use of osseous raw materials before and during Wari state expansion in the 1st millennium CE in the Cusco region of Peru. Results indicate that, at the site of Ak'awillay, communities were exploiting …

  • Sayrosa, a Minor Obsidian Source in the Puna of Arequipa

    Richard L Burger, E Patricia Tsurumi et al.•ARTICLE•Ñawpa Pacha•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 17

This article reports the identification of the Sayrosa Source, a minor geologic source of volcanic glass referred to Rare Type-3 obsidian in the 1977 pilot study by Burger and Asaro. Located only 25 km northeast of the major Alca-1 deposit, this source was exploited in prehispanic times despite the relatively small size of its nodules. Occasional flakes and bifaces of Sayrosa obsidian appear at archaeological sites in the puna of Chumbivilcas and…

    Bridget C Bey, Valerie A Andrushko et al.•ARTICLE•Ñawpa Pacha•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 46

The expansion of states and empires often has important consequences for local populations, including increased violence, greater stress, or dietary modifications resulting in changing health conditions. This paper presents the analysis of 73 skeletons from the Cusco site of Ak’awillay, shedding light on diet, health, and violence in the Middle Horizon. Results indicate that the people of Ak’awillay led a rigorous lifestyle and suffered from more…

  • Local Trade And Pottery Production In The Cusco Region Before And During The Wari Expansion

    Véronique Bélisle, Brian S Bauer•ARTICLE•Ñawpa Pacha•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 35

This paper assesses the impact of Wari state expansion on local trade networks in the Cusco region of southern Peru through an examination of the distribution of a locally-produced polychrome pottery style called Muyu Urqu. We present distribution data from regional surveys and excavation data from the village site of Ak’awillay to reconstruct the circulation of local ceramic wares and local economic activities before and after the Wari entered t…

  • Hallucinogens and Altered States of Consciousness in Cusco, Peru: A Path to Local Power during Wari State Expansion

    Open Access•Véronique Bélisle•ARTICLE•Cambridge Archaeological Journal•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 28

This paper addresses the tension between élite-sponsored rituals in the context of state expansion and the persistence of rituals involving hallucinogens among communities that met with state colonists. It focuses on the consumption of hallucinogens inducing altered states of consciousness during the Peruvian Middle Horizon (ad600–1000), a period characterized by the expansion of the Wari state, known for large state-sanctioned feasts during whic…

"Durante el Horizonte Medio (600-1.000 d.C.), la expansión del estado wari fue asociada a varios cambios a través del Perú. En Cusco, los waris construyeron grandes sitios e introdujeron una cultura material distinta a la local. Se ha planteado que la expansión wari fue facilitada por relaciones de intercambio establecidas entre Ayacucho y Cusco durante el Intermedio Temprano (200-600 d.C.). Esta interacción explicaría la emergencia de un nuevo e…

  • Understanding Wari State Expansion: A "Bottom-Up" Approach at the Village of Ak'Awillay, Cusco, Peru

    Open Access•Véronique Bélisle, Véronique Bélisle Véronique Bélisle•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2015•Cited by: 18•References: 47

This paper documents how ancient state expansion affected local communities. Many scholars have argued that the Wari state of Middle Horizon (A.D. 600-1000) Peru established direct imperial control over several provinces. Archaeologists have studied large Wari sites using a "top-down" approach, but rarely have they studied local settlements to see how and if local populations were affected by the expansion of the Wari into their regions. My resea…

The archaeological reconstruction of ancient states requires consistent regional measures of state-directed power and influence. This paper presents data from a series of systematic archaeological surveys in the Cusco region of highland Peru to evaluate patterns of influence by the Wari state during a period of colonization from ca. AD 600–1000. We discuss interpretive debates over the nature and intensity of Wari social power, suggesting that si…
