This study examines the effects of the geographical distance between adult offspring and their elderly parents on their support provided to their parents in rural China. Monetary and non-monetary support is closely related to the physical and psychological well-being of the elderly. Three waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) are used to identify a causal effect of the location of the adult offspring on outcomes suc…

Catherine Larochelle, Jeffrey Alwang et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2019

This article provides evidence from a randomised control trial conducted among potato farmers in Ecuador about the impact of mobile phone text messages on farmer knowledge about and adoption of integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Using psychological constructs, we examine competing explanations for non-standard decision-making leading to low adoption of beneficial agricultural technologies. Farmers who received text messages have signific…

  • Land ownership and technology adoption revisited

    Open Access•Di Zeng, Jeffrey Alwang et al.•ARTICLE•Land Use Policy•2018•Cited by: 6•References: 25

The lack of land ownership can discourage agricultural technology adoption, yet there is scarce evidence of the impact of land rental contracts on the adoption of improved crop varieties in developing countries. The current study investigates such impact using a nationally representative survey of Ethiopian maize farmers. In contrast to many previous studies, we show in a simple model that cash-renters are as likely to adopt improved maize variet…

Quentin Stoeffler, Jeffrey Alwang et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2016

Zimbabwe experienced an acute social, political, and economic crisis from 2001 to 2008 and is now on a recovery path. This paper explores changes in poverty between 2001, 2007, and 2011–2012 using an Alkire–Foster multidimensional poverty index. Results indicate a large increase in poverty across multiple dimensions of household wellbeing between 2001 and 2007 (the start of the crisis peak), followed by a decrease in poverty between 2007 and 2011…

  • Determinants of Food Stamp Program Exits

Bradford F Mills, Bradford Mills et al.•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•2001•Cited by: 8

This article examines factors that influence Food Stamp Program exits and finds that families who leave the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program are also more likely to leave the Food Stamp Program. However, the influence of TANF departure is smaller in states with large TANF caseload declines. The results also suggest that many families leaving the Food Stamp Program are still eligible for benefits. These families may have poor …

  • Portfolio models and planning for export diversification

    Jeffrey Alwang, P B Siegel•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•1994

Evidence is presented regarding strengths and limitations of portfolio approaches as applied to diversifying export earnings. An empirical application using data from Malawi, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe is used to demonstrate these strengths and limitations. Modifications of the typical portfolio approach to export diversification are presented; these modifications help make the approach more plausible for use in developing countries. The modified app…
