  • The development and use of multilingual repertoires in bilingual classrooms

    Open Access•James Hawkey, Juan Jiménez-Salcedo•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026•References: 37

Multiple education systems coexist in Andorra, including the national Escola Andorrana (EA, Andorran school) that adopts a multilingual approach to teaching, with both Catalan and French serving as equal languages of instruction throughout primary education. In this article, we interview educators and administrators in the EA in order to discover how they engage their agency in the pursuit of developing learner multilingual repertoires. We then u…

  • Pour une francophonie des communautés

    Open Access•Juan Jiménez-Salcedo•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 3

We start from the premise that the Francophonie cannot be grasped as a uniform block, but rather as a set of communities that must be analysed empirically. Based on this observation, we propose a case study of the Francophonie in the Principality of Andorra. The Andorran case has common characteristics with other Francophone contexts, but also has many particularities. The French language lives in a multilingual ecosystem where it fulfils only fo…

    Juan Jiménez-Salcedo, Juan Jiménez Salcedo•ARTICLE•La Revue Nouvelle•2020

    Juan Jiménez-Salcedo•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•2020•References: 6

The article describes the legal configuration of France as a monolingual state and analyzes the specific case of the educational system. A certain accommodation of regional languages as a means of instruction has been accomplished, either in time-parity bilingual sections or in immersion schools. In this respect, the data provided by the literature on the case of Catalan in the historic territory of Roussillon are reviewed. The sources analyzed s…

    Juan Jiménez-Salcedo•ARTICLE•Language Problems & Language…•2019•Cited by: 1

  • A minoritized language on both sides of the border

    Juan Jiménez-Salcedo•ARTICLE•Multilingua•2019

This article analyzes the legislation of the two territories that have the most advanced legal framework regarding language policies towards Catalan: Andorra and Catalonia. The study of the legislation in relation to contexts of social and institutional use shows how this legal framework is not sufficient to change Catalan from being a minoritized language, since the phenomenon of minoritization is innate to the ecosystem in which languages devel…
