  • Al-Andalus

Maria Jesús Rubiera Mata, Mikel De Epalza•ARTICLE•History and Anthropology•2007•Cited by: 3

The myth of Al‐Andalus, which has been revived in Spain, has had an ironic history. The myth's origins are literary and can be traced to the work of Al‐Maqqari of Tlemcen (1577–1632), a descendant of Muslims from Granada. This work attracted the attention of European orientalists, who discovered the forgotten history of that civilization, a history quickly expanded by studies of other Arab manuscripts. Spanish Arabists, equally influenced by Orie…

  • Negotiating Cultures

    S J Robert I Burns, Paul E Chevedden et al.•BOOK•Negotiating Cultures•1999

James I "the Conqueror", king of Arago-Catalonia, conquered Mediterranean Spain from Islam during fifty crusading years (1225-1276). From his many surrender treaties, only two survive in their interlinear bilingual originals, both presented here. Each reflects the fragmentation of post-Almohad Islam, the warrior heroes of Islam carving recalcitrant principalities out of the confusion, the hard-fought local negotiations and the confrontation betwe…

    Open Access•Mikel De Epalza•ARTICLE•Sharq Al-Andalus•1991
