  • The Numbers Are Eye Popping”

    Open Access•Carol S Walther, Stephanie D Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Social Currents•2021•References: 14

In this article, we examine newspaper accounts of same-sex demography to examine how journalists use U.S. Census Bureau statistics to discuss changes in lesbian and gay households from 1990 to 2015. We utilized Foucault’s discussion of discourse and discussed what we call statistical consciousness, the use of statistics in everyday life. We support these findings with qualitative examples of each same-sex household increase to show how journalist…

  • I Wouldn’t Bring in Anything that Could Be Challenged”

    Open Access•Carol S Walther, Corrine M Wickens et al.•ARTICLE•Social Currents•2019•References: 17

Rooted in protectionist discourses, would-be censors regularly frame censorship and book challenges as defenses against portrayals of deviance and social ills. Such concerns often feed into social control of community values and moral panics around the degradation of children’s presumed innate innocence. In this study, we investigated perceptions of public K-12 educators regarding the inclusion or exclusion of controversial materials in schools. …

  • Migration Patterns and Marriage Equality

    Open Access•Carol S Walther, Dennis F Corbin•ARTICLE•Humanity & Society•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 51

Attitudes toward marriage equality have gradually become more accepting as more and more states have passed legislation that acknowledged full or partial recognition of marriage equality. Given the traditionally conservative behavior of the South, this article analyzes how regional migration patterns and time affect attitudes toward marriage equality from the 1988 and the 2004 to 2014 General Social Survey data sets using a generalized linear mix…

  • White Trash and White Supremacy

    Open Access•Carol S Walther, David Embrick et al.•CHAPTER•Systemic Racism•2017

Using the deaths of James Byrd Jr. and Matthew Shepard as case studies, the authors analyze these two hate crimes through a content analysis of newspapers to explore white racial framing. They argue that Shepard was portrayed in the media by his whiteness and middle-class status, rather than his homosexuality. In contrast, Byrd was either ignored or demonized as a lower-class criminal. Furthermore, Shepard’s killers came to epitomize the lower cl…

  • Reflexivity in the interstices

    Corrine M Wickens, James A Cohen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 19

This article is a story of how the authors came to make sense of the significance of those words in relation to gender, race/ethnicity, and citizenship in writing a manuscript about L1L2 acquisition. It is a tale about how Reflexivity wove itself into the conversations, into the writing, into the in-between spaces, the interstices of the research and the writing. To this end, Reflexivity acts as a character interjecting itself into the journal na…

  • Voluntary Simplifiers, Spirituality, and Happiness

    Open Access•Carol S Walther, Jennifer A Sandlin et al.•ARTICLE•Humanity & Society•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 33

In this article, we explore the connections between voluntary simplicity (VS), people who are dedicated to consuming less material goods, and Western spirituality. We investigate how voluntary simplifiers connect their practices of simplicity with their concepts and enactments of Western spirituality. First, we propose two categories of voluntary simplifiers identities based on interviews with individuals practicing VS: (1) spiritual voluntary si…

  • The White Pages

    Open Access•Chandra L Jackson, David G Embrick et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2015•References: 22

In this article we examine the empirical impact of diversity on non-white participation in corporations by analyzing images of racial minorities that appear in business magazines. Our findings indicate that odds of non-white inclusion increase when explicit reference to diversity is made. We also find that non-whites are more likely to be depicted as having ancillary roles in corporations; rarely are they presented in leadership positions. Media …

  • Skin tone, biracial stratification and tri-racial stratification among sperm donors

    Carol S Walther•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 50

Conception through donor insemination is an attractive option for many couples and single women in the USA, being a relatively simple and inexpensive way of having a baby by a biological birth. Sperm banks provide online catalogues in which sperm donors can be selected according to their physical and social characteristics. One sperm bank's catalogue was analysed based on the pregnancy of selected donors. Three hypotheses were tested related to c…

  • Race, sport and social mobility

    Open Access•Robert Sean Mackin, Carol S Walther•ARTICLE•International Review for the…•2012•References: 42

This article addresses sport as a vehicle of social mobility for athletes of all racial backgrounds. Utilizing two waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, we test two sociological models. The zero-sum model argues that any time spent on sports takes away from time that could be spent on academics, hindering performance in school and ultimately mobility. The developmental model suggests that participation in sport contribute…

    Carol S Walther, Dudley L Poston•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2004•Cited by: 10•References: 8

This paper had two objectives. First, we developed for each large metropolitan area of the United States with a population of 500,000 or more in 1990 four indexes of gay partnering and four indexes of lesbian partnering. We compared and related these indexes and their variable measurements with one another. Second, using what we argue is the statistically and demographically preferred set of gay and lesbian partnering rates, we proposed and teste…
