Combined Perspectives on Textile Durability in 18th and 19th-Century Europe
Cowritten by a historian and a textile conservator-restorer, the article proposes to look at practices of durability as a way of understanding the specific intersection between technology and resources different societies depend on. Using our combined perspectives, we reflect on the particular juncture between resources and techniques which changing practices of durability in Europe between the 18th and the 19th centuries interrogate. The article…

‘Indian Gowns Small and Great’
The article focuses on the close study of a group of eighteenth-century chintz nightgowns that were ready-made or partly ready-made in India for the European market. Whereas nightgowns are usually associated with the taste for the exotic and the spread of the fashion is sometimes linked to the availability of the garment on the ready-made market, the production of ready-made gowns in India and the methods put in place to manufacture these commodi…
Behind the Seams
Starting from close analysis of a late seventeenth-century cotton nightgown made in India that borrows its pattern from a traditional Japanese motif, this article contextualises the garment within a group of three other similar gowns to understand the complex cultural geographies they wove together. From the small material details of the making and design of these textile hybrids, the article retraces a larger story of global trade and exchange: …
Party Animals
The Afterlife of Used Things
"Recycling is not a concept that is usually applied to the eighteenth century. 'The environment' may not have existed as a notion then, yet practices of re-use and transformation obviously shaped the early-modern world. Still, this period of booming commerce and exchange was also marked by scarcity and want. This book reveals the fascinating variety and ingenuity of recycling processes that may be observed in the commerce, crafts, literature, and…
