Some Factors in a Probability Sample Survey of a Metropolitan Community
Surveys conducted by the University of Michigan's Detroit Area Study in 1956, 1957, and 1958 employed an area-probability sample of metropolitan Detroit adults. No substitutions were permitted, nor was a specific limit put on the possible number of call-backs. To achieve the 2,313 interviews necessary for an 87 per cent response rate, a total of 7,743 calls was required. Although three-quarters of the completed interviews were obtained after thre…
