Typologising the corporatisation of parent roles in the ‘modern’ governance of Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs) in subordinated communities
This article develops and explores a typology illuminating the types of parent roles in the governance of Multi-Academy Trusts in the corporatised field of school governance and leadership. Policy has positioned parents as objects of managerialist and corporatised practice. This article draws on data generated through observations and interviews with corporate actors and parents from three multi-academy trusts. Such a typology seeks to describe a…
International students and everyday multiculturalism: Rethinking ‘connection’ through mundane sites of encounter
Dominant narratives of international students in the existing literature paint them as ‘missing’ or living ‘in parallel’ to their local communities, predominantly through evaluating the composition of their friendship networks. In this study, we query whether the use of a new conceptual framework can provide alternative explanations for these deficit framings. Using the lens of ‘everyday multiculturalism’, we explore instead how (international) s…
The mattering of place in the corporatised governance of schooling in subordinated communities

Thinking with Barad’s concept of intra-action, I explore how place physically embodies meaning, in its entanglement with human actors to configure corporatised versions of parental engagement. I argue that place acts co- agentically in an entangled intra-action with corporate actors managing parents’ engageme…

Mapping the discursive formations of ‘effective’ school governance and the role of parents
Discourses concerned with responsibilisation and expertise have seen the ascendency and fall in who is positioned to do 'effective' school governance and what that 'doing' is. Using the four phases of the moon as a metaphor I map the discursive formations of 'effective' school governance and the relational structuring of parents. This mapping exercise, through a simple metaphor, has produced a heuristic construct through which questions can be as…
