King Harold’s Sister Gunhild (d. 1087), a Royal Exile in Flanders
This article is a study of the life of Gunhild (d. 1087), sister of King Harold, who, together with her mother Gytha, sought exile in Flanders after the Norman Conquest; it is set in the wider context of the fate of high-status elite or royal women in post-Conquest England. Gunhild’s lead burial plaque with inscription (found in her tomb in the church of St Donatian in Bruges) constitutes a unique testimony to the fate of a royal sister in the af…

The English and Their Legacy, 900-1200
In this collection, pupils and colleagues pay tribute to the career of Ann Williams, whose work on eleventh-century England—especially her facsimile edition of Domesday Book and her book, The English and the Norman Conquest (1995; rev. ante, cxii [1997], 1236–7)—is well known. The contribution closest to her own work is the article by the volume’s editor David Roffe, himself a fellow Domesday Book specialist. He argues that in Lincolnshire more m…

Motherhood, Religion, and Society in Medieval Europe, 400-1400
This collection of fourteen essays in honour of the Oxford medievalist Henrietta Leyser is a welcome book on motherhood in the middle ages. The contributions cover a wide range of subjects, chronologically from late Antiquity to the later middle ages and geographically from northern Africa to Sweden, although just under half concern Britain. One of the most illuminating remarks about the dedicatee’s own views of her ‘métier’ come from her pupil S…

A Social History of England, 900–1200
The years between 900 and 1200 saw transformative social change in Europe, including the creation of extensive town-dwelling populations and the proliferation of feudalised elites and bureaucratic monarchies. In England these developments were complicated and accelerated by repeated episodes of invasion, migration and changes of regime. In this book, scholars from disciplines including history, archaeology and literature reflect on the major tren…

Women at the Beginning
La femme dans l'histoire et les mythes
The distinguished historian of Islam, the Turks and the Mongols, Jean-Paul Roux has written an inspiring comparative study of the history of women through the ages. Part anthropological study, part theological analysis and part social history, his study ranges widely from prehistoric Mesopotamia, through the Bible to Islam and Christianity. In the second part the author switches from a historical/chronological approach to a thematic one and tackl…
Eadmer of Canterbury
Eadmer of Canterbury (b. c.1060–d. after 1128) is best known as the historian biographer of St Anselm of Canterbury (d. 1109). That he also wrote a substantial hagiographical œuvre has remained an open secret due to the lack of modern editions and translations. The present volume of three saints’ lives composed by Eadmer is therefore most welcome. The protagonists are three Anglo-Saxon clergymen, supporters of the so-called Reform movement in the…

A History of Women in Christian Worship
A History of Women in Christian Worship, by Susan J. White (London: Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, 2004; pp. xv + 351. £27.50). This book offers a delightful exploration of the place of women in Christian worship. Although formally banned from acting as priests, all through the history of the Christian church women have carved out unofficial roles for themselves. Within their families, as wealthy mistresses of large households, or as …

Hereward and Flanders
Hereward ‘the Wake’ is renowned as one of the leaders of the English resistance to the Normans in the late 1060s and early 1070s. His involvement in the resistance is noted by all main sources, even though the extent to which he was responsible for actions in Ely and Peterborough remains to be elucidated. He is listed as a pre-Conquest Lincolnshire landholder and tenant in Domesday Book, which is the only contemporary source to mention, but not d…

Gender and Authority of Oral Witnesses in Europe (800–1300)
Between 1068 and 1070 an extraordinary dispute was settled at Bonneville-sur-Touques in Normandy. Duke William, who had recently become king of England, and his wife Matilda, heard the story of a contested property at Bayeux which centred on the identity of a rented child. The story goes as follows. A man called Stephen had married a widow called Oringa by whom he had a small son ( puerulus ) who lived only a short while. When the boy died, Oring…
