You’ve Been Living Here For as Long as You Can Remember”
Developed by Omocat and released in December 2020, OMORI is a surreal psychological horror role-playing game. The game follows the titular protagonist Omori as it examines such sensitive topics as suicide, grief, death, and depression. Such traumatic events are triggered in several planes of existence—White Space, Headspace, and Black Space—leading to anxiety, regression, and resurfacing trauma. In our article, we examine such representations of …
Gendered Nationalism
Within the frameworks of postcolonial analysis and gender studies, focused on the involvement of women in the struggle for independence of Bangladesh in 1971, this article presents and discusses three literary and filmic representations of Bangladesh’s War of Liberation. This analysis combines non-fictional and fictional perspectives and input and clearly confirms that, contrary to popular perceptions of predominantly male war heroes, women also …

The impact of the platformization of Arab news websites on quality journalism
As elsewhere in the world, Arab news websites depend on revenue streams built on the commercialization of social media platforms. Reliance on these platforms has created a major structural shift in news production, distribution and monetization, which has triggered serious concerns about fake news, misinformation and quality journalism. This paper investigates the extent to which four online-only news websites abide by quality journalism in the c…
Digital Islam and Muslim Millennials
Digital platforms have empowered individuals and communities to re-negotiate long-established notions of religion and authority. A new generation of social media influencers has recently emerged in the Muslim world. They are western-educated, unique storytellers, and savvy in digital media production. This raises new questions on the future of Islam in the context of emerging challenges, such as the openness of technology and the often-perceived …
Gendered self-representation and empowerment on social media in the United Arab Emirates
Social networking sites (SNSs) provide a set of affordances that allow young adults to represent various aspects of their gendered identities and construct their identity-related experiences. This paper adopts Goffman’s concepts in relation to social media and his dramaturgical theories of the self as a framework for the study of online self-presentation. The paper uses the Explanatory Sequential Mixed Method Design. The study conducted a quantit…
Containing a Corona Misinfodemic and Covidiocy
Misinformation surrounding the pandemic has spread rapidly in this age of digital virality. We argue that the factual and science-based discussion of the “corona crisis” on Anne Will and Maybrit Illner, two political talk shows on German public-service television, has contributed to containing both a potential misinfodemic and the virus itself. We use thematic analysis to interpret the data from ten shows in March at the height of the coronavirus…
Gender-Based Violence in Contemporary Digital Graphic Narratives From India
This paper analyzes representations of gender-based violence in recent digital graphic narratives from India. Focusing on rape in Priya’s Shakti (2014) and on acid attacks in the 2016 sequel, Priya’s Mirror, I argue that these two texts attempt to promote gender empowerment in their portrayal of Priya as a positive role model in the fight for gender equality. The texts show that the power to change attitudes resides in human beings but can only b…

My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist’
This article examines representations of men in political crises in the post-9/11 diasporic context. It argues that Karan Johar’s 2010 blockbuster movie My Name is Khan represents disability and asexuality in the protagonist Rizwan Khan as challenges to dominant trans/national discourses on masculinity. The main character is portrayed as a Muslim South Asian in the United States who turns into a heroic figure that transgresses national, racial, r…
