Educating for peace in the culture wars: The example of sojourner truth
Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) education in the United States (US) is embattled, facing charges of “wokeness” from the right as well as critical scholarship questioning its transformative capabilities from the left. Students, however, require effective instruction about difference if they are to navigate changing US demographics. I argue that DEI education and peace education can deepen a fruitful partnership to address critiques from bot…
The Rising Tide of Hindu Nationalism: Threats and Opportunities for Peace
Observers of Indian politics have noted rising acts of violence against Muslims in an atmosphere of increasing Hindu nationalism during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tenure. Hinduism, however, like all religions, also contains many resources for peace. Looking to both theory and practice, this piece examines how we can theorize Hinduism and religion in general as a source of protection for peace and human rights. It also looks for peaceful pract…
Critical feminist justpeace”: A grounded theory approach to Women, Peace and Security
More than 20 years after the landmark achievement of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, feminist scholars and activists are debating the conditions in which peacebuilders should employ the agenda and those in which they should pursue alternatives. This article argues that the conflict and peacebuilding in Manipur, a state in Northeast India, is ripe for creative thinking beyond WPS. India refuses to acknowledge legally this intractable, …
Reasoned Choice or Performative Care? Women's Transformative Peacebuilding Identities in Manipur, India
Countering the inevitability of communal violence, Amartya Sen defines identities as the product of individual, reasoned choice. Although he acknowledges that such choices are constrained, I argue that Sen’s position overlooks (1) the relational character of identities which reflect caring responsibility rather than autonomous choice, and (2) the power structures that constrain agents’ choices. Using original ethnographic research conducted with …
Structural Violence, Intersectionality, and Justpeace: Evaluating Women's Peacebuilding Agency in Manipur, India
The general scholarship on armed conflict in Manipur, India, ignores the experiences of women as agents. Feminist scholarship counters this tendency, revealing women's everyday responses to the violence that constrains them. However, this scholarship often fails to be intersectional, and it lauds every instance of women's agency without evaluating it in terms of its ability to build peace. Employing Kimberlé Crenshaw's underused distinction betwe…
