  • Development of critical spatial thinking through GIS learning

Minsung Kim, Robert S Bednarz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•2013•Cited by: 8•References: 7

This study developed an interview-based critical spatial thinking oral test and used the test to investigate the effects of Geographic Information System (GIS) learning on three components of critical spatial thinking: evaluating data reliability, exercising spatial reasoning, and assessing problem-solving validity. Thirty-two students at a large state university completed pre- and post-tests administered during the 2010 fall semester. This study…

  • Effect of GIS Learning on Spatial Thinking

Jongwon Lee, Robert S Bednarz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•2009•Cited by: 18•References: 1

A spatial-skills test is used to examine the effect of GIS learning on the spatial thinking ability of college students. Eighty students at a large state university completed pre- and post- spatial-skills tests administered during the 2003 fall semester. Analysis of changes in the students' test scores revealed that GIS learning helped students think spatially. These improvements were the result of the connection between students' GIS activities …

  • Environmental Research and Education in US Geography

    Robert S Bednarz•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•2006•Cited by: 6

This article evaluates geography as an appropriate home for environmental education. First, it argues that many geographers have defined geography as a discipline with a major, if not primary, interest in human–environment interactions. Next, it reviews the recent statements by non-geographer, environmental scholars that, directly or indirectly, argue for strong participation by geographers in environmental science and sustainability studies. Aft…

  • Collaboration and the Successful Use of Information and Communications Technologies in Teaching and Learning Geography in Higher Education

David C Rich, David Rich et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•2000•Cited by: 10•References: 2

Collaboration may help secure many of the benefits of, and overcome many of the obstacles to, the transformation of learning and teaching that is currently in prospect, arising partly from the pervasive effects of information and communications technologies. Benefits accrue from interactions and sharing between students and between staff, and in developing teaching resources, creating learning-resources databases, and delivering courses. Internat…

  • Timing Space and Spacing Time

    Open Access•Peter J Hugill, Robert S Bednarz et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Review•1982•Cited by: 2

  • Pollution, Property Value, and Air Quality Control Strategies

    Open Access•Robert S Bednarz, R Bednarz•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1977•References: 3

The housing stock of Chicago is divided into several groups based on the race and income of the residents in the housing. It is shown that the relationship between air pollution intensity and property values varies greatly from group to group. The ramifications of these findings for the interpretation of similar studies by other researchers are discussed in light of this conclusion
