Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment in Military Services: Culture, Hypermasculinity, and the Futility of Zero-Tolerance Approaches
This introduction to the Special Forum on Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment in Military Services begins with a discussion of zero-tolerance approaches to sexual assault and sexual harassment, arguing that such approaches tend to be ineffective and result in problematic outcomes. Furthermore, zero-tolerance approaches are associated with the same hypermasculine cultural practices that contribute to the prevalence of sexual assault and sexual ha…
Sexual Misconduct in the Military: The Impact of Situational Factors on Bystander Intervention Strategies
Intervening is frequently encouraged to prevent or respond to sexual misconduct. However, due to the characteristics of military organizations (e.g., hierarchical structure), intervening may be challenging in military contexts. The aim of this study is to examine situational factors present in militaries (e.g., bystander's rank relative to the perpetrator's) that may impact the use of direct or indirect intervention strategies. A sample of Canadi…
Intercultural Conflict and Mediation: An Intergroup Perspective
This study investigates the role of components of intercultural competence in the use of intercultural mediation behaviors. Through the use of the Revised Intercultural Mediation Measure, an instrument revised by the authors, 291 Anglophone and 161 Francophone participants in Canada were asked to indicate their likelihood of employing various mediation strategies to reduce a conflict between two linguistic groups. The results demonstrated that in…
Becoming a Cultural Intermediary: A Further Social Corollary of Second-Language Learning
Much of the research linking language and discrimination has been concerned with first-language practices. Yet an intergroup perspective supports the possibility that prejudice may be communicated between groups not sharing the same first language. This article explores how factors associated with the acquisition and use of a second language contribute to the development of antidiscriminatory behaviours. Data regarding these issues were collected…
Second Language Learning and Cultural Representations: Beyond Competence and Identity
The socio-contextual model of second language (L2) learning proposes that L2 learning is influenced by aspects of contact with the L2 community, L2 confidence, and identification to both the first language and L2 community (Clément, 1980; Noels & Clément, 1996). The present study examines how these aspects are linked to individuals' cultural representations, corresponding to attitudes toward the L2 community (Sperber, 1996). Respondents included …
