  • Vīs and Rāmīn

    Open Access•Minoo S Southgate•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Asiatic…•1986•References: 5

Composed somewhere between 1040 and 1054, Fakhr al-Dīn As'ad Gurgānī's metrical romance of Vīs and Rāmīn celebrates the adulterous love of Queen Vīs and the King's younger brother, Rāmīn. In his introduction the poet informs us that the tale of Vīs and Rāmīn enjoyed great popularity in his time although it was not widely understood in its Pahlavi version or satisfactorily rendered into New Persian. Next are the “Qasa'id” (Elegies, or Odes) in Persian and Arabic, the “Marasi” …

Like most Iranians, I did not suspect that the Middle East was as guilty of racism against blacks as Europe and America were. Ironically, it was in New York, in the late ‘60s, that I came across medieval Iranian sources showing racism against blacks. I decided then to do a paper on the subject, but r…

  • Portrait of Alexander in Persian Alexander-Romances of the Islamic Era

    Minoo S Southgate•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Oriental…•1977

Persian medieval romance-writers drew their knowledge of Alexander from the PseudoCallisthenes, Syriac sources, the Koran and Arabic legends of the Dhil-Qarnain (the Twohorned), and to a minor extent Persian material. Most writers Persianize Alexander and justify his attack against Darius. They maintain the outlines of the Pseudo-Callisthenes, but change the portrait of Alexander. Under the influence of Diets and Sayings of the Philosophers and I…
