  • The Astronomical Basis of Egyptian Chronology of the Second Millennium BC

    Peter J Huber•ARTICLE•Journal of Egyptian History•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Egyptian dates are widely used for fixing the chronologies of surrounding countries in the Ancient Near East. But the astronomical basis of Egyptian chronology is shakier than generally assumed. The moon dates of the Middle and New Kingdom are here re-examined with the help of experiences gained from Babylonian astronomical observations. The astronomical basis of the chronology of the New Kingdom is at best ambiguous. The conventional date of Thu…

  • The Solar Omen of Muršili II

    Peter J Huber•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Oriental…•2001

The fragmentary text KUB 14.4, a prayer of the Hittite king Mursili II, is reexamined with regard to chronological implications. The king recounts various misdeeds of the old queen, his stepmother. In particular, he tells how she tried to leverage a solar omen into an attempt to demote him. From the reconstructed sequence of events and actions of the queen and the king, I argue that this omen-presumably a noticeable, but not necessarily a total, …

  • Shape-invariant modelling of human growth

Open Access•Werner Stützle, Thomas Gasser et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1980

A new approach to modelling human height growth is presented which is also suitable for other variables. In a mathematical algorithm, some guess about the functional form of this growth process is improved consistently using the data; the resulting shape-invariant model (SIM) allows an approximately bias-free fitting for longitudinal data from 1 to 20 years with six parameters assigned to each individual. The SIM approach and the use of velocitie…

  • Analysis of the adolescent growth spurt using smoothing spline functions

Open Access•R H Largo, Thomas Gasser et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1978

Height growth velocity curves between 4.5 and 17.75 years were estimated, using smoothing spline functions, for 112 boys and 110 girls from the Zurich Longitudinal Study (1955--1976). Parameters characterizing the growth process, such as peak height velocity and age at peak height velocity, were calculated directly from the estimated curves. The variability of parameters describing the adolescent growth spurt is large, both between and within sex…

  • Robust Regression

    Peter J Huber•ARTICLE•The Annals of Statistics•1973

Maximum likelihood type robust estimates of regression are defined and their asymptotic properties are investigated both theoretically and empirically. Perhaps the most important new feature is that the number $p$ of parameters is allowed to increase with the number $n$ of observations. The initial terms of a formal power series expansion (essentially in powers of $p/n$) show an excellent agreement with Monte Carlo results, in most cases down to …

  • Robust Estimation of a Location Parameter

    Open Access•Peter J Huber•ARTICLE•The Annals of Mathematical…•1964

This paper contains a new approach toward a theory of robust estimation; it treats in detail the asymptotic theory of estimating a location parameter for contaminated normal distributions, and exhibits estimators--intermediaries between sample mean and sample median--that are asymptotically most robust (in a sense to be specified) among all translation invariant estimators. For the general background, see Tukey (1960) (p. 448 ff.) Let $x_1, \cdot…
