  • Schwa realisation in verbal inflection in two dialogue registers of German spontaneous speech

Open Access•Robert Lange, Bianca Sell et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Sprachwissenschaft•2024

Word-final schwa in German inflectional suffixes shows varying realisations in spontaneous speech – from full realisations with varying duration to no realisation. While previous research has identified numerous social, distributional, and grammatical factors influencing the variation of phonetic variables in general, it remains unclear how fine-grained functional differences in different registers specifically affect schwa realisation. In this c…

  • Interaction between Phrasal Structure and Vowel Tenseness in German

    Open Access•Maria Belz, Oksana Rasskazova et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 82

Phrase-final lengthening affects the segments preceding a prosodic boundary. This prosodic variation is generally assumed to be independent of the phonemic identity. We refer to this as the ‘uniform lengthening hypothesis’ (ULH). However, in German, lax vowels do not undergo lengthening for word stress or shortening for increased speech rate, indicating that temporal properties might interact with phonemic identity. We test the ULH by comparing t…

  • Defining Filler Particles

    Open Access•Maria Belz•ARTICLE•Languages•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 56

The terms hesitation, planner, filler, and filled pause do not always refer to the same phonetic entities. This terminological conundrum is approached by investigating the observational, explanatory, and descriptive inadequacies of the terms in use. Concomitantly, the term filler particle is motivated and a definition is proposed that identifies its phonetic exponents and describes them within the linguistic category of particles. The definition …

  • Posttraumatic stress disorder and comorbid depression among refugees

    Open Access•Maria Belz, Michael Belz et al.•ARTICLE•Transcultural Psychiatry•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 26

In 2015, a large number of refugees arrived in Germany, mostly driven to emigrate by devastating circumstances in their countries of origin. Arriving refugees are distributed to reception centers within the German federal states, frequently facing marginal conditions in terms of overcrowding or waiting time of several months until their application for asylum is processed. Most of these refugees underwent numerous traumatizing experiences-both in…
