Commercial and industrial land conversion in Germany
In numerous Western countries, there has been a notable trend of commercial and industrial land conversion towards other uses. Scholars contend that this shift results not only from the relocation of industry to lower-cost regions, but also from neoliberal urban policies favouring residential and office development at the expense of traditional employment lands. Germany offers a compelling case study in this regard, as its major cities have under…
What drives densification and sprawl in cities? A spatially explicit assessment for Vienna, between 1984 and 2018
The spatial arrangement of settlements constitutes a long-lasting legacy and shapes the prospects for transformations toward sustainability. Thus, understanding the drivers of changes in settlement patterns is essential. In this article, we present a spatially explicit, geostatistical analysis of settlement dynamics, and a qualitative investigation of its regulative, demographic, and economic drivers, using the example of Vienna, Austria between …
Ioer Monitor
This paper gives a comprehensive introduction to the IOER Monitor – an open research data infrastructure (RDI) in Germany providing domain-specific multi-temporal geospatial datasets, services and visualizations for land use and land cover (LULC)-related development of settlements and open space and closely related topics. Its easy-to-use information system provides multi-scale data offers to form a discussion platform that supports spatial devel…
The more the merrier? Questioning the role of new commercial and industrial locations for employment growth in German city regions
Dyadic judgments based on conflicting samples
The present research demonstrates a so far unrecognized impediment of group performance, metacognitive myopia (Fiedler, 2012). Judges and decision‐makers follow the given samples of information uncritically and neglect the metacognitive assessment of the samples' validity. Applying this notion to dyadic judgments, we instructed dyads to jointly estimate conditional probabilities p (Win|A) and p (Win|B) of Lotteries A and B. One person per dyad ex…
The Promotion of Building Culture in Rural Germany
Over the past two decades, building culture has increasingly caught the attention of the architectural and planning professions. The building culture is to be understood in the broadest sense as the sum of all cultural, economic, technological, social and ecological factors influencing the quality and process of planning and construction. While the revitalisation and promotion of building culture is central to discussions on urban areas, these ar…
The Presenter's Paradox Revisited
Three experimental studies demonstrate that evaluation mode influences the assessment of product bundles. Consumers' preferences for product bundles are more pronounced in a joint evaluation mode, where the bundle is directly contrasted to its single counterpart (i.e., the bundle without its add-on), than in a separate evaluation mode, where the bundle is evaluated in isolation. An attentional explanation is suggested: consumers pay more attentio…
Land-use monitoring by topographic data analysis
The rate of land consumption is an important factor to be considered within policies on sustainable land use aiming to reduce demand for settlement and traffic areas. As an expression of the political intent to achieve sustainable development, the German government announced to reduce the consumption of open space for settlement or transportation infrastructure significantly by 2020. Progress toward such specific goals can, of course, only be mon…
