Barriers to Optimal Child Sleep among Families with Low Income
This study gathered formative data on barriers to optimal child sleep to inform the development of a sleep intervention for parents of preschool-aged children in low-income households. Parents ( n = 15, age: 34 ± 8 years, household income: $30,000 ± 17,845/year) reporting difficulties with their child's sleep participated in this study. Online‐delivered parenting intervention for young children with disruptive behavior problems
BACKGROUND: This study evaluated whether an evidence-based parenting intervention, when delivered online, could effectively address disruptive behavior problems in young children and yield outcomes comparable to in-person delivery of the same intervention. METHODS: Families (n = 334) of children (3-7 years; 63% White, 22% African American, 15% other races; 63% male) with disruptive behavior problems were randomized to online-delivered interventio…
Feasibility and Preliminary Outcomes From a Pilot Study of an Integrated Health-Mental Health Promotion Program in School Mental Health Services
The prevalence of unmet health and mental health needs among youth has spurred the growing consensus to develop strategies that integrate services to promote overall well-being. This pilot study reports on the feasibility and outcomes of a theory-driven, family-focused, integrated health-mental health promotion program for underserved adolescents receiving school mental health services. Parent and adolescent assessments conducted prior to and fol…

Enhancing Accessibility and Engagement in Evidence-Based Parenting Programs to Reduce Maltreatment
11 focus groups (N = 160) of high-risk parents in Los Angeles County were asked to assess the value of social media to deliver an evidence-based parenting program, Triple P-Positive Parenting Program, to reduce child maltreatment. For feasibility, (N = 238) parents were surveyed regarding their internet use. Parents responded enthusiastically to the online program, and expressed the importance of a sense of community and learning through the expe…

Population-Based Prevention of Child Maltreatment
The prevention of child maltreatment necessitates a public health approach. In the U.S. Triple P System Population Trial, 18 counties were randomly assigned to either dissemination of the Triple P-Positive Parenting Program system or to the services-as-usual control condition. Dissemination involved Triple P professional training for the existing workforce (over 600 service providers), as well as universal media and communication strategies. Larg…

A developmental perspective of the relationship of racial–ethnic identity to self-construct, achievement, and behavior in African American children
This longitudinal study examines the development of racial-ethnic identity among African American children. Racial preferences were assessed in early elementary school with the Racial Attitudes, Beliefs, and Stereotypes Measure-II, a projective technique using paired comparisons of pictures of African American, Asian, Latino, and Caucasian children. Racial-ethnic identity in 3rd grade was assessed using the Multi-Ethnic Identity Measure Ethnic Be…

Home Chaos
We conducted 2 studies to (a) establish the usefulness of the construct of home chaos, (b) investigate its correlates, and (c) determine the validity of the Confusion, Hubbub, and Order Scale (CHAOS) used to measure the construct in each study. Study 1 relied on a sample of European American preschoolers and their mothers and Study 2 on a sample of African American school-age children and their caregivers. Home chaos was associated with less effe…

Latent Models of Family Processes in African American Families
This study explored the assessment of family processes for a sample of African American kindergarten children, parents, and teachers involved in the EARLY ALLIANCE prevention trial. Using modified versions of the Family Assessment Measure, the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales, the Family Beliefs Inventory, and the Deviant Beliefs measure, internal consistency analyses along with exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses provi…
Aggressive Children and Effective Communication
Testing a component of a theoretical model which postulates that low levels of communication effectiveness accompany the social and affective problems presented by aggressive children, the study compared the communication skills of a group of aggressive (n = 49) and nonaggressive (n = 49) elementary school children (selected on the basis of teacher ratings) in a structured and cooperative communication task. Based on direct observational measures…

Enhancement of social learning family interventions for childhood conduct disorder
Enhancement of social learning family interventions for childhood conduct disorder
Social learning family intervention (SLFI) is the treatment of choice for young children exhibiting severe conduct disorder and antisocial behavior. Despite the reported success of this intervention, high levels of resistance, poor engagement, and inadequate maintenance of improvements are observed for a substantial proportion of distressed families. These obstacles have inspired enhancement efforts to improve basic social learning family-interve…

Multivariate Assessment of Conflict in Distressed and Nondistressed Mother‐adolescent Dyads
A battery of measures was used to assess conflict between mothers and young adolescents (females and males, 11 to 15 years of age). Two groups of families, one composed of a distressed clinical sample (N = 38), the other a nondistressed normative sample ( N = 40), participated. The assessment battery included retrospective judgments, frequency estimates, self‐monitored home recording, and tape‐recorded discussion of a home problem. Content of ass…
