Criando a Nuestros Niños hacia el Éxito (CANNE) is the Spanish adaptation of Parenting Our Children to Excellence (PACE). A pilot study conducted with 124 parents of preschoolers (mostly recent Mexican immigrants) provides preliminary evidence for the community acceptability and efficacy of CANNE. Eighty-eight of the 124 parents who enrolled in the program attended one or more of the 8 sessions (17% attended 1 session, 11% attended 2-4 sessions, …
Child and Parental Outcomes Following Involvement in a Preventive Intervention: Efficacy of the Pace Program
A developmental perspective of the relationship of racial–ethnic identity to self-construct, achievement, and behavior in African American children
This longitudinal study examines the development of racial-ethnic identity among African American children. Racial preferences were assessed in early elementary school with the Racial Attitudes, Beliefs, and Stereotypes Measure-II, a projective technique using paired comparisons of pictures of African American, Asian, Latino, and Caucasian children. Home Chaos: Sociodemographic, Parenting, Interactional, and Child Correlates
We conducted 2 studies to (a) establish the usefulness of the construct of home chaos, (b) investigate its correlates, and (c) determine the validity of the Confusion, Hubbub, and Order Scale (CHAOS) used to measure the construct in each study. Study 1 relied on a sample of European American preschoolers and their mothers and Study 2 on a sample of African American school-age children and their caregivers. Home chaos was associated with less effe…
Latent Models of Family Processes in African American Families: Relationships to Child Competence, Achievement, and Problem Behavior
This study explored the assessment of family processes for a sample of African American kindergarten children, parents, and teachers involved in the EARLY ALLIANCE prevention trial. Using modified versions of the Family Assessment Measure, the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales, the Family Beliefs Inventory, and the Deviant Beliefs measure, internal consistency analyses along with exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses provi…

Social competence and behavior evaluation in children ages 3 to 6 years: The short form (SCBE-30).
The factor structure and scale characteristics of the shortened version ofthe Social Competence and Behavior Evaluation Scale (SCBE; P. J. LaFreniere & J. E. Dumas, 1995) are presented for a Quebec sample and 3 U.S. samples, as well as age and gender differences in the prevalence of emotional and behavioral problems and social competence throughout the preschool years. Principal-components analyses identified 3 factors in all 4 samples: social co…
The effectiveness of behavioral parent training to modify antisocial behavior in children: A meta-analysis
Aggressive Children and Effective Communication
Testing a component of a theoretical model which postulates that low levels of communication effectiveness accompany the social and affective problems presented by aggressive children, the study compared the communication skills of a group of aggressive (n = 49) and nonaggressive (n = 49) elementary school children (selected on the basis of teacher ratings) in a structured and cooperative communication task. Based on direct observational measures…

Attentional problems in dysfunctional mother^child interactions: An interbehavioral model
Attentional problems in dysfunctional mother-child interactions: An interbehavioral model
A review of the literature on dysfunctional mother-child interactions indicates a consistent association between dysfunction and environmental stressors. The association does not always seem due to an absence of parenting skills but more so due to a stress-induced deficiency in maternal attention. Some mothers, who also live in the midst of stressors, are not in synchrony with cues offered through their children's various behaviors. The literatur…
