Studies in Gothic
Discourse articulation in the Gothic Gospels, with notes on the treatment of the same phenomenon in the Classical Armenian and Old Church Slavic versions
This chapter investigates the entire range of discourse articulators in the Gothic Gospels, including aþþan, iþ, þan, nu, -(u)h, þaruh, þanuh, -(u)h þan, auk, and jah, comparing them to their equivalents in the Greek text and providing notes on similar phenomena in the Classical Armenian and Old Church Slavic versions. Our results show that aþþan is the strongest of the discourse-level adversatives in Gothic. Iþ functions as an oppositive, signal…
Adversative Conjunction and Neighboring Discourse Features in Old Church Slavic (Codex Marianus), with Comparative Notes on the Same Phenomena in Greek, Gothic and Classical Armenian
The system of adversative conjunction in the Old Church Slavic Gospels is characterized by two pure adversatives, nŭ and the much less frequent obače , together with two other forms, a and že , which are employed with equal or greater frequency in non‐adversative conjunctive roles. The relationship between nŭ and a is complex. The role of the former is primarily corrective following a negated constituent, while the latter signals a change of topi…
The relationship between metrical, syntactic, and rhetorical structure in the Rigveda: The gāyatrī stanza
It is often said, independently of any linguistic evidence, that the refusal of the redactors of the Rigveda text to allow sandhi between the second and third eight-syllable verses (pādas) of the three-line Rigvedic gāyatrī stanza is based on their parallel convention in the cases of the four-line triṣṭubh and anuṣṭubh stanzas, where the first two lines predominantly serve as an independent discourse unit (distich) relative to the last two. This …

Historical Linguistics and Biblical Hebrew: An Indo-Europeanistâ€tms View
Rezetko and Youngâ€TMs Historical linguistics and Biblical Hebrew: steps toward an integrated approach brings variation analysis to bear on the question of the periodisation of Biblical Hebrew. However, this methodology is at best microdiachronic, dealing with variation in synchronic terms. In order to answer the question they pose, a language with a history as long as Biblical Hebrew requires macrodiachronic techniques which look at real linguis…

Remarks on the position of the verb in the Rigveda
Dans une etude precedente (1991), l'A. examinait les traits syntaxiques et discursifs associes aux phrases rig-vediques ou le verbe est place en position initiale de phrase. Il etend ici son investigation sur d'autres positions possibles du verbe dans la phrase rig-vedique. Il met en evidence un aspect particulier de l'ordre des mots: la relation entre la structure metrique et l'amplification, plus specifiquement la correlation entre les strophes…

The Diachronic Syntax of the Particle u in the Rigveda
The exact meaning and syntactic function of the particle u in the Rigveda has always presented difficulties. In this article it is argued that the various employments of u in the Rigveda can be reduced to two basic functions: a coreferential function and a conjunctive function. The historical connection between these two values is subsequently traced, and it is shown that the conjunctive value of u is the result of a straightforward reinterpretat…
