  • How blame-avoidance and credit-claiming attempts affect policy change in times of crisis

Open Access•Céline Honegger, Susanne Hadorn et al.•ARTICLE•Policy and Society•2025•References: 14

How do blame-avoidance and credit-claiming attempts affect the way officeholders govern a crisis and, in turn, adjust their policies? By answering this research question, we shed light on the relationship between officeholders’ aim to avoid blame and claim credit, their problem definition, and policy change. We thus argue that crisis governance is not only guided by crisis-related problems but also by politically motivated goals. In this way, we …

  • Introduction to the Debate

    Open Access•Wolf Linder•ARTICLE•Swiss Political Science Review•2025•References: 5

The discrepancy in political participation between men and women or the lower turnout of young voters in elections and direct democracy frequently captures the interest of researchers. In contrast, Swiss studies on the participation and voting behavior of citizens with a low level of education are rare exceptions (Bühlmann & Freitag, 2006; Giger et al., 2012; Dermont, 2016; Sciarini et al., 2016; Linder, 2020). This is even more surprising as the…

  • Politics of education

    Open Access•Wolf Linder•ARTICLE•Swiss Political Science Review•2025•References: 4

In the 1960s, Swiss education experts identified three significant groups of young individuals facing disadvantages in accessing higher education: women, rural youth, and those with parents from lower social classes. Since then, federal and cantonal policies have successfully addressed equality for women and rural youth; however, young individuals from lower social classes continue to experience persistent disadvantages. This case study on social…

  • Conclusions to the Debate

    Open Access•Wolf Linder•ARTICLE•Swiss Political Science Review•2025•References: 9

As mentioned in the introduction to this debate, studies examining the voting behaviour of citizens with a low level of education are rare in Switzerland (Bühlmann & Freitag 2006; Giger et al., 2012; Dermont, 2016; Sciarini et al., 2016). This contrasts with the numerous in-depth analyses of the participation gap experienced by women and young people. The empirical investigations in this debate, some of which use new databases, reveal novel insig…

  • Swiss Legislation in the Era of Globalisation

    Open Access•Wolf Linder•ARTICLE•Swiss Political Science Review•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 1

How do globalisation and internationalisation influence Swiss legislation? While the other contributions to this debate focus on direct and indirect effects of Europeanisation, the following article deals with the more general question of internationalisation. The development of international law as part of the Swiss legislation is observed over a long period of 25, partly of 60 years. Quantitative empirical findings are used to give some answers…

  • Switzerland and the EU

    Wolf Linder•ARTICLE•Contemporary Politics•2013•Cited by: 6•References: 12

Switzerland is not a member of the EU and in 1992 refused to join the European Economic Area (EEA) treaty in a popular vote. A conservative majority preferred to keep utmost national autonomy, and consequently, relations between the EU and Switzerland are regulated by a series of bilateral treaties. This process of Europeanisation without institutionalisation has led to profound changes of Swiss politics over the last two decades. While many effe…

  • On the Merits of Decentralization in Young Democracies

    Wolf Linder•ARTICLE•Publius The Journal of Federalism•2010•Cited by: 7•References: 6

Three features of decentralization proposed by institutional development theory are analyzed for Mozambique's Autarquias, politically autonomous municipalities since 1997. The three issues analyzed in this article are: Consolidation of the fiscal state, democracy, and the development of service quality in the local administration. Under decentralization, each of the three features is shown empirically to allow progress toward political developmen…

  • What drives democratisation in Asia and Africa

    Open Access•Wolf Linder, André Bächtiger•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•2005•Cited by: 21•References: 31

With many developing countries stuck in an uneasy middle ground between full‐fledged democracy and outright dictatorship, the question of favourable and unfavourable conditions for democratisation is dramatically brought back into focus. Yet, systematic comparative analysis that analyses a range of favourable and unfavourable political, economic and cultural factors is rare, particularly as far as African and Asian countries are concerned. This a…

  • Swiss democracy

    Wolf Linder•BOOK•Swiss democracy•1994

The features of Swiss democracy are frequently praised in theory but rarely assessed in practice. In this book Wolf Linder explains the way government and politics work in Switzerland. Combining the essence of many empirical studies with own observations, and giving illustrative examples, the author thoroughly analyses the institutions of federalism and consensus democracy through political power-sharing. With the critical eye of a political scie…
