  • Figure recognition and visual attention patterns behind the observation of Palaeolithic art

    Open Access•María Silva-Gago, Marcos García-Diez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Cognitive…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 84

Art visual processing is a complex cognitive process that involves perception, attention and decision-making. The initial stage of this process is characterized by visual exploration through rapid eye movements which can provide insights into attentional patterns and information processing and can be examined using eye-tracking technology. In this study, we employ eye-tracking to investigate visual perception during the observation of Palaeolithi…

  • AMS Radiocarbon Date for Precolumbian Caribbean Rock Art: Borbón Cave No. 1, Dominican Republic

Open Access•Marcos García Díez, Adolfo López et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2022•References: 8

We present an AMS radiocarbon date from a bird image in a cave on the island of Hispaniola in the northern Caribbean. Borbón Cave No. 1 contains a key rock art assemblage that likely reflects a significant part of past native Taíno societies' symbolic thought and beliefs. The grouping has already served to define one rock art style in the Antilles: the Borbón School. Our sample yielded a date of 890 ± 30 BP (1045-1225 cal AD). This result, as wel…

  • Visiting Palaeolithic Art – Explorations and Archaeological Implications in Cueva De Las Monedas, Spain

    Open Access•Marcos García Díez, Marcos García‐Diez et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 3

Numerical chronology is one of the main sources of information by which one may contextualize prehistoric human activity more precisely. It is able to discriminate between different times of visits to caves and determine the period with which each form of evidence should be associated and the relationships between them. The application of conventional 14C and 14C‐AMS has dated visits to the Palaeolithic cave art site of Las Monedas during histori…

  • Gravettian Figurative Art in the Western Pyrenees: Stratigraphy, Cultural Context, and Chronology

    Open Access•B Ochoa, Marcos García-Diez et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Archaeology•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 10

The timing and nature of the emergence of art in human evolution has been one of the more debated subjects in palaeoanthropology in the last few years, and one of the areas where archaeology has made impressive advances. Here, we discuss the first evidence of figurative art on portable materials in the north of Spain. After analysis of the stratigraphic contexts of all examples potentially of this age, which eliminated those of uncertain provenan…
