    Child-woman ratios have long been recognized as a valuable estimator of general fertility rates when vital events data are absent or unreliable. Using child-woman ratios, we analyze the effective fertility differentials between Osage full-bloods and mixed-bloods. A comparison between these two social groups reveal that the mixed-blood Osage subpopulation had a significantly higher effective fertility rate than did the full-bloods. From this data,…

    In August, 1877, approximately 937 Northern Cheyenne were forcibly removed from their northern homeland and transferred to the Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho Agency, Indian Tenitory. Upon their anival, they were beset by disease, malnutrition, and cultural alienation. During their residence at the Cheyenne and Arapaho Agency, the Northern Cheyenne experienced malarial infections, measles, and dysentery, resulting in a high degree of moroidity and …
