  • An Increase in Small Flake Sharp-edge Productivity Across the Initial–Early Upper Paleolithic at Tolbor (Mongolia)

Open Access•Corey L Johnson, Tsedendorj Bolorbat et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2026

The Upper Paleolithic archaeological record of the Tolbor Valley (northern Mongolia) documents a shift in emphasis from large-blade production to smaller-format bladelet production, characteristic of the Initial Upper Paleolithic (IUP) to Early Upper Paleolithic (EUP) transition in Central and Northeast Asia. This periodization is often associated with, respectively, early dispersal and permanent instalment of Homo sapiens populations in eastern …

  • Is there an Aurignacian in the Lake Baikal region of eastern Siberia? Deciphering mixed assemblages

  • Defining the Contribution of Animals and Humans to Bone Accumulation in Pleistocene Deposits Using Spatial Statistics (With Special Reference to the Main Chamber of the Tsagaan Agui Cave)

Daria Marchenko, Daria V Marchenko et al.•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2026

Identifying agents of bone accumulation in caves is often complicated by intense activity of carnivores. A methodology based on studying the density of finds and testing correlation between bones and lithic artifacts was applied to the Pleistocene layers of the Main Chamber in Tsagaan Agui Cave. Principal component analysis was performed to reduce data dimensionality, and its results were grouped using clustering. As a result, a group of layers (…

  • New Site Delgertsogt in the Selenga Corridor and its Place in the Regional Initial Upper Paleolithic

    Open Access•Arina M Khatsenovich, Y Tserendagva et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

The paper presents a study of the Delgertsogt site in Eastern Mongolia, representing a new archaeological complex of the Initial Upper Paleolithic (IUP). The site is located in the basin of the Kherlen River, a tributary of the Selenga, the site marks one of the branches of the northern route of expansion of Homo sapiens. The Initial Upper Paleolithic populations occupied certain geographical zones and natural corridors: the Danube Valley in Cent…

  • Possible Evidence of Early Middle Paleolithic Human Occupation in the Selenga River Basin: Northern Mongolia and Western Transbaikalia

    Open Access•Evgeny P Rybin, Arina M Khatsenovich•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

The authors present data of a comparative analysis of the stratigraphic and typological evidence from two stratified sites attributed to the early stages of the Middle Paleolithic: the lower horizons of the Khotyk site in Transbaikalia and the lower horizons of the Tolbor-21 site in Northern Mongolia. In some areas of Tolbor-21, several levels of archaeological material relating to various stages of the Late Pleistocene have been recorded beneath…

  • Changes in the Morphology of Laminar Products in the Upper Paleolithic Industries of Tolbor-4 (Mongolia)

    Open Access•Evgeny P Rybin, Daria V Marchenko et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

The article provides the analysis of blade product morphology from the cultural and chronological sequence of the Tolbor-4 site (Northern Mongolia), covering the periods of the Initial, Early, and Late Upper Paleolithic (ca. 45,000–12,000 BP). During the site occupation, homogeneous local raw material was used, which makes it possible to exclude the influence of raw material factor on the morphology of knapped products. The study was primarily ai…

  • Spatial Analysis of Archaeological Horizon of the Final Early Upper Paleolithic at Tolbor-21 site (Northern Mongolia)

    Open Access•Daria V Marchenko, Arina M Khatsenovich et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

The article provides a spatial analysis of Archaeological Horizon 2 (AH2) at the Tolbor-21 site, containing rare evidence of human presence in Northern Mongolia during the climatic change era associated with the Last Glacial Maximum. The collection from this horizon serves as a source for reconstructing the characteristics of lithic industry of the final Early Upper Paleolithic (EUP). The enclosing lithological layer has undergone significant pos…

  • Taphonomic Features of Lithic and Bone Finds: Use of Fabric Analysis for Identifying the Impact of Natural Processes on the Formation of Archaeological Horizons

    Open Access•Daria V Marchenko, Arina M Khatsenovich et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2024

Fabric analysis is a method of determining the role of natural processes in the formation of archaeological horizon based on orientations and inclination angles of finds. A system of indices (isotropy and elongation indices) characterizes mutual location of long axes of objects. Plotted on ternary diagram, the indices show what kind of natural processes affected the archaeological horizon, since each area of the diagram corresponds to a certain p…

Since its earliest stages, the development of the Upper Paleolithic of Mongolia was impacted by several hiatuses observable in cultural and stratigraphic sequences. These breaks may be linked with the most significant alternations of climate and with corresponding ecological responses. The LGM was one such major climate change and is correlated with an interruption of human settlement throughout the region under analysis. The paucity of dated ass…
