Open Access•Ana Carolina de Barros, Terri A Croteau et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Education•2026

Little is known about how postsecondary students experience instructors’ disclosures of mental illness and/or neurodiversity in the classroom. This exploratory study queried students’ ( n = 330) understandings of how these revelations shaped their perceptions of disclosing instructors, behavioral intentions, and attitudes toward mental illness. Most students reported that instructors’ disclosures had positively influenced their perceptions of the…

  • Postsecondary instructors’ disclosures of mental illness and neurodiversity in the classroom

Simonne Horwitz, Jan Gelech et al.•ARTICLE•Teaching in Higher Education•2025

Existing literature has described a diverse array of motivations for postsecondary instructors’ disclosures of mental illness in higher education classrooms. These motivations lack integration and have been discussed mainly in isolation from corresponding practices, audiences, mediums, contexts, and diagnoses. We conducted a series of focus group interviews and gathered reflective narratives and questionnaire data with six postsecondary instructo…

  • Kidney Transplantation and South African Medical Hierarchies

    Open Access•Simonne Horwitz•ARTICLE•Gender & History•2021

First, they developed specialised skills in dialysis that were vital to transplant success. Second, through countless hours of close observation of post‐transplant …

  • Apartheid in a parka”? Roots and longevity of the Canada–South Africa comparison

    Simonne Horwitz•ARTICLE•Safundi•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 7

Comparisons between Aboriginal policy in Canada and apartheid in South Africa appear frequently in public discourse, often with claims of actual links between the two systems. This paper interrogates these supposed links, using an analysis of land policy and the pass system in each country to demonstrate the improbability of the claims of direct influences. The paper then goes on to analyze the intellectual history of these comparisons, asking wh…

  • Black Nurses in White’

    Simonne Horwitz•ARTICLE•Social History of Medicine•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 3

This article explores the complex motivations and influences which persuaded black women to enter nursing between the late 1940s and 1980 in South Africa. It shows how black nurses actively negotiated and reshaped the images associated with a world-wide sisterhood within the context of what Shula Marks has called a ‘divided sisterhood’ in South Africa. The individual voices of nurses are heard through semi-structured interviews of nurses trained …
