High mountains, late palaeolithic hunting. The case of Hučivá Diera Cave in the Tatra Mts. (West Carpathians)
Archaeological research of three caves in the Tatra Mountains in 2019-2023
This publication discusses the results of the project, which explains the mysterious lack of any traces of the Palaeolithic in the Tatra Mountains. Research undertaken in recent years in three caves – Obłazkowa and Dziura in the Polish Tatra and Hučivá diera Cave in the Slovak Tatras – have shown the destruction of sediments in Polish caves. Only in the Slovak cave was it possible to discover and partially examine a camp of the Late Paleolithic p…
The Department of Stone Age Archaeology of the Institute of Archeology of Jagiellonian University in the last half-century
The Department of Stone Age Archaeology of the Institute of Archeology of Jagiellonian University was established in 1985. Its first director was Professor Bolesław Ginter. In the first years, the focus was on fieldwork in Egypt. Further activity covered the Palaeolithic layers of caves in today’s Bulgaria (Bacho Kiro, Temnata) and Greece (Klissoura) and southern Poland (Ciemna and Obłazowa Caves). Upper Palaeolithic open sites in the Váh River v…
A new find from the northern border of the Tatra Mountains
Despite over a hundred years of various archaeological works, including the latest in Hučiva Cave, considering the presence of Stone age peoples, Tatra Mountains remain an archaeological terra incognita. Therefore it is very important to communicate any new finds. The purpose of this article is to present the discovery from the mouth of the Lejowa valley, found in 2009 in close proximity to the formerly known site no. 1 in Witów, com. Kościelisko…
Hučivá Cave
This article discusses the objectives of the Stone Age Man in Caves of the Tatra Mountains project, which aims to explain the mysterious absence of evidence for the Palaeolithic in the Tatra Mountains of Eastern Europe. We present preliminary work from Hučivá Cave, which demonstrates clear traces of Magdalenian settlement within this region
Corded Ware culture at Zagórze in the Middle Beskid (Polish Western Carpathians)
In 2012, series of archaeological rescue excavations were carried out at Zagórze, due to the construction of the Świnna Poręba retention reservoir on the Skawa river in Wadowice district (Lesser Poland voivodeship). During this research, in one of the excavated sites – no. 8 – a flint tool was discovered below the top of the slope in the diluvial cover, in the secondary position. The preliminary analysis showed that it is a so-called flame knife,…
The impact of major warming at 14.7 ka on environmental changes and activity of Final Palaeolithic hunters at a local scale (Orawa-Nowy Targ Basin, Western Carpathians, Poland
There is a widespread belief that the abrupt warming at 14.7 ka had a profound impact on the environment. However, the direct correlation between the global climatic event and changes in local environments is not obvious. We examined faunal succession in an intra-mountain basin of the Western Carpathians to assess the potential influence of the climatic change between Greenland Stadial-2a and Greenland Interstadial-1e on the local environment. We…
Late Glacial environment and human settlement of the Central Western Carpathians
The hoard of bronze objects from site 8 at Zagórze, Wadowice District
During rescue excavations carried out in 2012 in site 8 at Zagórze, Comm. Mucharz, Dist. Wadowice, a hoard of bronze objects was discovered, comprising a binocular brooch of the Strzebielinko type, three spiral bracelets made of thick bronze sheet of triangular cross-section, and three twisted necklaces with flattened and rolled ends. The deposit should be dated to HaD and linked with the Górnośląsko-Małopolska (Upper Silesian-Lesser Polish) grou…
