  • Radiocarbon dating of highly diverse Pleistocene faunal assemblage from Graniczna Cave (Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, Poland)

Agnieszka Bolik-Głuszek, Michał Gizler et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026

The article presents first insights to radiocarbon dating of taxonomically diverse Pleistocene faunal assemblage recovered from Graniczna Cave in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. The material represents one of the most heterogeneous cave bone accumulations in the region, comprising remains of large and small mammals. Thirteen bone samples representing different taxa were selected for AMS radiocarbon dating, and one sediment sample was analyzed usin…

  • Stratigraphy of Biśnik Cave

Open Access•Aleksandra Kropczyk, Adrian Marciszak et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026

A new series of 11 radiocarbon (AMS) dates were obtained to the Biśnik Cave, one of the most important Central European sites. New AMS dates contributed to a more precise stratigraphic model for the complex sequence of sediments in this site. Received results showed that layer 1a is younger than 15 kyr, and layers 1b, 1 and 2 are dated on 25–15 kyr. Layers 4–3 were dated on 40–35 kyr, while layers 7–5 on 70-40 kyr. Layer 7 is the first and the up…

  • Growth rate of cave ice based on 14 C dating of fossil bats as a palaeoenvironmental proxy for the last 1300 years in the Western Carpathians

    Open Access•Magdalena Jelonek, Jacek Pawlak et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2025•References: 60

Among various palaeoclimatic analyses of the Late-Holocene, assessing the cave ice growth rate offers valuable insights into past environmental conditions. Dobšiná Ice Cave (DIC; Carpathians, Slovakia) is an impressive ice cave, which hosts one of the most extensive subterranean perennial ice block. Thirteen organic macroremains were collected from a clearly layered ice section ca. 12 m thick. 14 C dating of the samples enabled the construction o…

  • Applying sterols and bile acids as biomarkers for identifying human versus wild animals' faecal traces in cave sediments at archaeological sites

Open Access•Natalia Gryczewska, Marcin Sulwiński et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 49

Faecal biomarkers are used to trace and identify the source of faecal matter at various types of archaeological sites. Until now, the focus has been centred on humans and domesticated animals. However, in caves, it's wild animals that play a role in the deposition of organic matter. To assess the participation of animals and humans at such sites through molecular markers it is crucial to recognize their biomolecular signature. We developed a data…

  • Small vertebrate and mollusc community response to the latest Pleistocene-Holocene environment and climate changes in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland (Poland, Central Europe)

Open Access•Claudio Berto, Marcin Szymanek et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2022

  • Faunal renewals during the Early Pleistocene on the northern Italian Peninsula

Open Access•Claudio Berto, Elisa Luzi et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2022

  • The Middle Pleistocene small mammals from the lower layers of Tunel Wielki Cave (Kraków-Częstochowa Upland)

Open Access•Claudio Berto, Adam Nadachowski et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2021

  • The impact of major warming at 14.7 ka on environmental changes and activity of Final Palaeolithic hunters at a local scale (Orawa-Nowy Targ Basin, Western Carpathians, Poland

    Open Access•Anna Lemanik, M Baca et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2020

There is a widespread belief that the abrupt warming at 14.7 ka had a profound impact on the environment. However, the direct correlation between the global climatic event and changes in local environments is not obvious. We examined faunal succession in an intra-mountain basin of the Western Carpathians to assess the potential influence of the climatic change between Greenland Stadial-2a and Greenland Interstadial-1e on the local environment. We…

  • Late Glacial and Holocene paleoecology and paleoenvironmental changes in the northern Carpathians foreland

    Open Access•J Wilczyński, M T Krajcarz et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 15

The study of past environments, their ecology, and detailed changes through time has become an important task of environmental science. Records of paleoenvironment usually vary between regions owing to different influences of local climate, vegetation, relief, and depositional processes. Therefore, studying local sequences thoroughly allows paleoenvironmental and paleoecological reconstructions for particular regions, but it also provides importa…
