Archaeological research of three caves in the Tatra Mountains in 2019-2023
This publication discusses the results of the project, which explains the mysterious lack of any traces of the Palaeolithic in the Tatra Mountains. Research undertaken in recent years in three caves – Obłazkowa and Dziura in the Polish Tatra and Hučivá diera Cave in the Slovak Tatras – have shown the destruction of sediments in Polish caves. Only in the Slovak cave was it possible to discover and partially examine a camp of the Late Paleolithic p…
The Department of Stone Age Archaeology of the Institute of Archeology of Jagiellonian University in the last half-century
The Department of Stone Age Archaeology of the Institute of Archeology of Jagiellonian University was established in 1985. Its first director was Professor Bolesław Ginter. In the first years, the focus was on fieldwork in Egypt. Further activity covered the Palaeolithic layers of caves in today’s Bulgaria (Bacho Kiro, Temnata) and Greece (Klissoura) and southern Poland (Ciemna and Obłazowa Caves). Upper Palaeolithic open sites in the Váh River v…

The Beginning of the Early Upper Paleolithic in Poland
Research on the timing of Homo sapiens dispersals in Central Europe is pivotal for understanding the behavioral trajectories of human adaptation to low biomass environments and cold climates. Previous studies on the Early Upper Paleolithic of Poland described a different scenario from the European panorama characterized by the local development of a laminar/lamellar technology from the foregoing Middle Paleolithic and the coexistence of different…
A new find from the northern border of the Tatra Mountains
Despite over a hundred years of various archaeological works, including the latest in Hučiva Cave, considering the presence of Stone age peoples, Tatra Mountains remain an archaeological terra incognita. Therefore it is very important to communicate any new finds. The purpose of this article is to present the discovery from the mouth of the Lejowa valley, found in 2009 in close proximity to the formerly known site no. 1 in Witów, com. Kościelisko…
The Neolithic Sequence of the Middle Dunajec River Basin (Polish Western Carpathians) and Its Peculiarities
For some time, there has been more information about the Neolithic settlement on the left bank of the middle Dunajec in the Wiśnicz Foothills. In addition to the intense traces of Linear Pottery Culture, there are clear traces of the continuation of the settlement here at the fifth millennium BC and the beginning of the fourth, which represent groups of the Lengyel-Polgar cycle. These discoveries confirm the high qualities of this part of the Pol…
Hučivá Cave
This article discusses the objectives of the Stone Age Man in Caves of the Tatra Mountains project, which aims to explain the mysterious absence of evidence for the Palaeolithic in the Tatra Mountains of Eastern Europe. We present preliminary work from Hučivá Cave, which demonstrates clear traces of Magdalenian settlement within this region
Corded Ware culture at Zagórze in the Middle Beskid (Polish Western Carpathians)
In 2012, series of archaeological rescue excavations were carried out at Zagórze, due to the construction of the Świnna Poręba retention reservoir on the Skawa river in Wadowice district (Lesser Poland voivodeship). During this research, in one of the excavated sites – no. 8 – a flint tool was discovered below the top of the slope in the diluvial cover, in the secondary position. The preliminary analysis showed that it is a so-called flame knife,…
The impact of major warming at 14.7 ka on environmental changes and activity of Final Palaeolithic hunters at a local scale (Orawa-Nowy Targ Basin, Western Carpathians, Poland
There is a widespread belief that the abrupt warming at 14.7 ka had a profound impact on the environment. However, the direct correlation between the global climatic event and changes in local environments is not obvious. We examined faunal succession in an intra-mountain basin of the Western Carpathians to assess the potential influence of the climatic change between Greenland Stadial-2a and Greenland Interstadial-1e on the local environment. We…
Models of Raw Material Exploitation as an Indicator of Middle Paleolithic Mobility
Late Glacial environment and human settlement of the Central Western Carpathians
Paleobiology and Taphonomy of a Middle Paleolithic Neandertal Tooth from Ciemna Cave, Southern Poland
The hoard of bronze objects from site 8 at Zagórze, Wadowice District
During rescue excavations carried out in 2012 in site 8 at Zagórze, Comm. Mucharz, Dist. Wadowice, a hoard of bronze objects was discovered, comprising a binocular brooch of the Strzebielinko type, three spiral bracelets made of thick bronze sheet of triangular cross-section, and three twisted necklaces with flattened and rolled ends. The deposit should be dated to HaD and linked with the Górnośląsko-Małopolska (Upper Silesian-Lesser Polish) grou…
Missing elements in the cultural understanding of the hydrothermal landscape of the Carpathians in the Middle Paleolithic
Late Middle Paleolithic of Southern Poland
Late Middle Palaeolithic occupations in Ciemna Cave, southern Poland
Recent excavations in Ciemna Cave in the Prądnik valley near Ojców, southern Poland have brought to light new stratigraphic and techno-typological evidence concerning Late Middle Palaeolithic groups and their cultural affinities. In 2007, excavations began in the hitherto-unexplored main chamber of Ciemna Cave, with the goal of clarifying the results of previous work in other parts of the cave. During excavation the rocky floor of the cave was re…

Micoquian assemblage and environmental conditions for the Neanderthals in Obłazowa Cave, Western Carpathians, Poland
Studies in Pleistocene settlement in the Polish Carpathians
During the late 1970s when the results of theoretical analyses of prehistoric settlement to the north and south of the Polish Carpathians became available along with new methods of field research (Rydlewski & Valde-Nowak 19791, they set in motion a process of systematic discovery of archaeological sites in the region. Rich Palaeolithic assemblages were recovered which have yet to be published in full in Polish periodicals (e.g. Rydlewski & Valde-…

Neolithic Transhumance in the Black Forest Mountains, SW Germany
The presence of Neolithic people in mountainous areas of Central Europe is a debated topic and there is a lack of systematic fieldwork to explore patterns of land use in upland regions. The results of two survey campaigns in the Black Forest mountains of SW Germany aid our understanding of Neolithic expansion into the uplands. An extensive inventory of flint artifacts dating predominantly from the Late Neolithic provides evidence of summer highla…
