Fortuyn versus Wilders versus Baudet: The evolution of populist radical right party organization in the Netherlands
Existing research has shown that there is considerable diversity when it comes to populist radical right party (PRRP) organization, but it is unclear why this is the case. The Netherlands provides an ideal laboratory to examine this question. Within two decades, the country witnessed the rise of several PRRPs, including the List Pim Fortuyn (LPF), the Party for Freedom (PVV) and Forum for Democracy (FvD). Despite ideological similarities, there a…
Post-war Manifestations of Euroscepticism in Germany and the Netherlands, 1950-2021. A Comparative Approach
This contribution addresses post-war manifestations of Euroscepticism in Germany and the Netherlands. The two countries are selected as relevant cases to study in historical-comparative perspective, because of the many similarities as far as European integration policies is concerned, but the different ways in which Euroscepticism took shape in their political arenas. This partly resulted from historical experiences, particularly the processing o…
Enerzijds …
Memberless parties: Beyond the business-firm party model
It is widely assumed that political parties need to have members in order to fulfil their functions in a representative democracy (drawing up platforms, candidate nomination and electoral mobilization) and in terms of their legitimacy. However, the theoretical literature on party models – the evolution from the mass party to the catch-all party, the electoral-professional party and/or the cartel party – suggests an increasing marginalization of m…
Rural protest groups and populist political parties: Ethical and societal considerations on killing animals
Some agricultural or rural protest groups in the Western world evolved into political parties - often of a populist nature - whereas others did not. This book is the first to explore under which conditions this happens, and to what extent current populist parties have agricultural or rural ties and related agendas. Well-known authors with a background in rural studies or in political sciences describe and analyse the situation in a number of West…

Independent Local Political Parties in the Netherlands
In the last 15 years, the Netherlands has witnessed the enormous growth of independent local parties and of their electoral support. In order to assess the success of independent locals in the Netherlands, this paper explores how independent local parties distinguish themselves ideologically, organisationally, and operationally. It presents the results of two online surveys of 1,800 independent and other local parties in the Netherlands. Compared…
The Netherlands
Over the years the Netherlands has traditionally been a warm supporter of European cooperation. However, the beginning of this century saw a groundswell of support for Eurosceptic parties. This growing scepticism was also reflected in the consultative referendum on the draft European Constitution of 1 June 2005 (see Lucardie & Voerman 2006: 1201–1203). The ‘Reform Treaty’, which was signed in Lisbon in December 2007, was ratified by the lower hou…

Surfing citizens and floating voters: Results of an online survey of visitors to political web sites during the Dutch 2002 General Elections
This article assesses the role of political web sites in the campaign for the Dutch parliamentary elections of 2002. It presents the results of an online survey of 18,000 visitors to political Web sites to examine how far, 1) political Web sites can engage people in politics and, 2) par ty Web sites in particular can reach floating voters. The results of the survey reveal that political Web sites are only partly able to involve people in politics…
Archiving the Web: Political Party Web Sites in the Netherlands
‘Pantha rhei,’ was one of the tenets of the Greek philosopher Heraclitus. This observation on life in Greece in the sixth century BC is certainly relevant to the World Wide Web some 2,500 years later. On the Web everything is in a state of flux and is subject to continuous change. The Web is expanding at an enormous pace; millions of new pages appear every month. The number of sites - the building blocks of the Web - is increasing by millions eac…

Different shades of green: A comparison between members ofGroen LinksandDe Groenen
A comparison between Groen Links (formed in the Netherlands by a fusion of the Pacifist‐Socialist Party, the Political Radical Party, the Evangelical People's Party and the Communist Party of the Netherlands) and its ecological rival De Groenen enables Panebianco's conclusions about the effect of a party's size to be put to the test. The members of the small De Groenen seem hardly more active than members of the somewhat larger Groen Links, nor m…

Members of the First Chamber, the upper house of the Dutch parliament, are elected by members of the Provincial State councils. Following the elections to the Provincial States on 6 March 1991, the First Chamber was dissolved, and on 27 May 1991, a new chamber was elected (see Table 1)
The extreme right in the Netherlands: The centrists and their radical rivals
The Extreme Right in the Netherlands has always been relatively weak; there was neither a strong ideological right‐wing tradition nor a solid social base. Moreover, the Extreme Right has always been fragmented and divided. Historically, three varieties can be distinguished: theocratic Protestantism (‘Very Old Right’), neo‐fascism or national socialism (‘Old Right’) and ethnocentric nationalism (‘New Right’). The third variety, since 1984 represen…
The Netherlands' green paradoxes
In CNS 10, Barney Dickson analyzed the first Party Congress of Holland's Green Left. The present account of Green Left and their rivals The Greens by Gerrit Voerman (who directs the Documentation Center on the Dutch Political Parties at the University of Gronngen) deals with the origins and development of the green political movement in the Netherlands, and the respective roles of Green Left and The Greens, focusing on the alliances that make up …
