Exploring the relationship between sunlight exposure, psychological health, and gestational weight gain
Depression was associated with total GWG when sleep quality was controlled for while sunlight exposure had no significant association with GWG. Future studies should study the complex relationship between factors of mental health, sleep, and weight gain during pregnancy. Healthcare providers may be better equipped to develop interventions aimed to prevent negative maternal and fetal health outcomes
The influence of anti-smoking messages to Indonesian youth smoking behavior
The study concluded that there were only two variables of the anti-smoking messages that had relation with the Indonesian youth smoking behavior, which were current smokers. Unfortunately those variables increased the odds of the respondents to become current smokers. Indonesia government should develop media following international best practices to convey the anti-smoking messages
Study of Symbols in Indonesian Tradition as an Effort to Improve the Covid-19 Health Messages During the Pandemic
The number of COVID-19 cases in Indonesia is still on the rise. The government has issued policies to suppress, anticipate, and break the chain of COVID-19 transmission, including the 5M health protocol. However, the community has not fully adhered to this appeal. Without a strong cultural basis, society may find it difficult to accept behavior change. Conflicting command norms and descriptive norms for certain types of behavior in the social con…
Utilization of Postnatal Care Service in Indonesia and its Association with Women’s Empowerment
Spatial analysis of outdoor tobacco advertisement around children and adolescents in Indonesia
There is a major gap of action by the Indonesian government to control tobacco advertisement. This study aimed to compare outdoor tobacco advertisements (OTAs) in locations with and without OTA bans in relation to their proximity to children and adolescents. Global positioning system coordinates of all OTAs visible from the streets in Banyuwangi and Surabaya in East Java province were collected and analysed to determine their density at 0-100, >1…
Two tobacco retailer programmes in Banyuwangi, Indonesia
Both programmes promote product and brand display at retailers to create brand loyalty. The SRC mobile application for online sales is potentially attractive to young customers and allows for data collection about retail and customer purchase behaviours that can be used for tailored marketing. Tobacco sales promotion strategies should be strongly regulated. Banning indoor tobacco advertisement, promotion and tobacco display at POS should be encou…
Density of outdoor food and beverage advertising around gathering place for children and adolescent in East Java, Indonesia
Objective: To survey outdoor food and beverage advertisements (‘F&B adverts’) for products that may be a risk factor for obesity, diabetes and CVD located in the vicinity of gathering places for children and adolescents. Design: We recorded the GPS coordinates of all F&B adverts visible from the streets at distances of 0–100, 100–300 and 300–500 m from facilities often used by children and adolescents. Those for unhealthy foods and beverages were…
Maternal depression is the predominant persistent risk for child cognitive and social-emotional problems from early childhood to pre-adolescence
Our findings confirm those of previous studies that prevention of risk exposures during early childhood is likely to support long-term child development. It also adds evidence to a previously scarce literature for the middle childhood period. Prevention of maternal depressive symptoms and child anemia during middle childhood should be assessed for effectiveness to support child development
Association between women’s empowerment and diarrhea in children under two years in Indonesia
Determinants of age‐appropriate breastfeeding, dietary diversity, and consumption of animal source foods among Indonesian children
Global child feeding practices remain suboptimal. In this study, we assess the determinants of age-inappropriate breastfeeding, dietary diversity, and consumption of 3+ types of animal source foods (ASFs) using 11,687 observations from combined data from the Indonesian Demographic Health Survey of 2012 and 2017. We used linear and logistic regression after adjusting for the complex sampling design. Child's age and quality of antenatal care (ANC) …
From glass boxes to social media engagement
Tobacco companies in Indonesia have strategically differentiated their advertisements based on retailer type and have bridged conventional retailer marketing to online channels. Reforming Indonesian tobacco laws to include bans on single sticks and small pack sales, point-of-sale advertising, including displays, and enforcement of laws on sales to minors is urgently required
Mixed-methods evaluation of a ban on tobacco advertising and promotion in Banyuwangi District, Indonesia
Policy violations were evident 1 year after the launch of OTA ban in Banyuwangi. Tobacco advertisements are still visible, including near schools and religious sites, potentially stimulating adolescents to smoke. Regional regulation and setting specific violation reductions as a performance indicator for POA could improve compliance. App-based technology could assist violation surveillance and reporting, as could awareness-raising campaigns that …
Association of Safe Disposal of Child Feces and Reported Diarrhea in Indonesia
Indonesia still faces several challenges in the areas of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). Diarrhea remains a major killer of children and it is important to understand the local diarrhea transmission pathways to prioritise appropriate WASH interventions to reduce diarrhea burden. This study used a cross-sectional data set from a recent national household survey (the 2012 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey) to examine the associations b…
Determinants of stunting in Indonesian children
The combination of unimproved latrines and untreated drinking water was associated with an increased odds on stunting in Indonesia compared with improved conditions. Policies and programmes to address child stunting in Indonesia must consider water, sanitation and hygiene interventions. Operational research is needed to determine how best to converge and integrate water, sanitation and hygiene interventions into a broader multisectoral approach t…
Better to die than to leave a friend behind
Tobacco control policy in Indonesia is, by international standards, very rudimentary. Weak regulation has made Indonesia a ‘place of freedom’ for tobacco companies. Tobacco advertising and promotion is rampant and has been described as being ‘above the law’ and the ‘most aggressive and innovative in the world’.1 2 Tobacco advertisements are highly visible in all media (electronic, print and public billboards and displays),3 4 and have contributed…
