Financial Sanctions, SWIFT, and the Architecture of the International Payment System
Financial sanctions, alongside economic sanctions, are components of the toolkit used by governments as part of international diplomacy. The use of sanctions, especially financial, has increased over the last 70 years. Financial sanctions have been particularly important whenever the goals of the sanctioning countries were related to democracy and human rights. Financial sanctions restrict entities-countries, businesses, or even individuals-from …
The Sensitivity of the CPI to Exchange Rates
This paper quantifies the relative importance of the different channels of CPI responsiveness to exchange rates and import prices across 21 industrialized economies. The paper provides new and rich cross-country and cross-industry details on the sensitivity to exchange rates of distribution margins; the extent of imported inputs use in different categories of consumption goods; and on their role in consumption of nontradables, home-produced trada…
Neurodevelopmental delay in children infected with human immunodeficiency virus in Soweto, South Africa
HIV in children is a serious and growing problem in sub-Saharan Africa. At present very little is known about the neurological complications of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected children in South Africa. The aim of this study was to determine the extent and prevalence of neurodevelopmental delay in a group of HIV-positive children in Soweto, South Africa, as well as to determine what factors were predictive of neurodevelopmental delay. …
Exchange Rate Pass-Through into Import Prices
We provide cross-country and time series evidence on the extent of exchange rate pass-through into the import prices of 23 OECD countries. We find compelling evidence of partial pass-through in the short run, especially within manufacturing industries. Over the long run, producer-currency pricing is more prevalent for many types of imported goods. Countries with higher rates of exchange rate volatility have higher pass-through elasticities, altho…
Employment versus Wage Adjustment and the U.S. Dollar
Using two decades of annual data, we explore the links between real exchange rates and employment, wages, and overtime activity in U.S. manufacturing industries. Especially in industries with lower price-over-cost markups, exchange rates have statistically significant effects on industry wages, with the magnitude of these effects rising as industries increase their export orientation and declining as imported input use becomes more important. Exc…
Exchange rate regime reforms with black market leakages
Exchange Rates and Investment in United States Industry
The path of the dollar has significantly influenced investment activity in U.S. industry. The effects of both exchange-rate levels and exchange-rate volatility have been more pronounced in the 1980s than in the 1970s. Although aggregate investment data mask some of these relationships, the effects of exchange rates on investment are most pronounced in the disaggregate data for manufacturing durable goods sectors and nonmanufacturing sectors. Thes…
