  • Mereological Perspectivism in Philosophy of Biology

    Open Access•Adrian Stencel, Juana Suárez•ARTICLE•Philosophy Compass•2026

This paper presents the philosophical implications of the position that we call mereological perspectivism . Mereological perspectivism asserts that determining whether a composite biological object constitutes a single unit (an individual) necessarily depends on the selection of privileged parts of the composite. First, we show how mereological perspectivism is used in several debates in philosophy of biology (biological individuality, ecosystem…

  • Levels and Hierarchies in Evolution

    Open Access•Juana Suárez•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•2026

I analyse the main characteristics of the hierarchy of levels of selection as manifestors of adaptation (i.e., hierarchy of levels of evolutionary organization) and show that, while ranked, this hierarchy is non-nested. Secondly, I consider a potential objection to my approach derived from Eronen and Ramsey’s (2022) claim that levels of organization should be teased apart from levels of selection . I argue that their approach rests on a failure t…

  • The accidental archive: Mujer es audiovisual/Cine en Femenino and the recent history of Colombian women filmmakers1

Juana Suárez, Jimena Prieto et al.•ARTICLE•Moving Image Review & Art Journal…•2025

Since 2009, Cine en Femenino has been the most important showcase of the work of women filmmakers in Colombia. The festival was created by Mujer es audiovisual, a production and distribution collective spearheaded by the filmmaker Jimena Prieto. This article is an account on how submission in optical media and other materials became an accidental archive that documents the participation of women, their setbacks and achievements in the audiovisual…

  • Deep Learning Application for Biodiversity Conservation and Educational Tourism in Natural Reserves

Open Access•Marco Flórez, Oscar Becerra et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2024

Natural reserves, such as the Santurbán Moor in Colombia, are ecologically important but face significant threats from activities like mining and agriculture. Preserving biodiversity in these ecosystems is essential for maintaining ecological balance and promoting sustainable tourism practices. Identifying plant species in these reserves accurately is challenging due to environmental variability and species similarities, complicating conservation…

  • Scrutinizing microbiome determinism: Why deterministic hypotheses about the microbiome are conceptually ungrounded

    Open Access•Juana Suárez•ARTICLE•History & Philosophy of the Life…•2024•References: 5

This paper addresses the topic of determinism in contemporary microbiome research. I distinguish two types of deterministic claims about the microbiome, and I show evidence that both types of claims are present in the contemporary literature. First, the idea that the host genetics determines the composition of the microbiome which I call "host-microbiome determinism". Second, the idea that the genetics of the holobiont (the individual unit compos…

  • Pluralism and complexity without integration? A critical appraisal of Mitchell’s integrative pluralism

Open Access•Roger Deulofeu, Juana Suárez•ARTICLE•THEORIA An International Journal…•2023

This paper critically examines Mitchell’s integrative pluralism. Integrative pluralism is the view that scientific explanations should primarily aim to integrate descriptions from different ontological levels. We contend that, while integrative pluralism is a fundamental strategy in contemporary science, there are specific reasons why one should not expect integration in the sense developed by Mitchell to be the optimal strategy and the one that …

  • Rethinking hereditary relations: The reconstitutor as the evolutionary unit of heredity

Open Access•Sophie Juliane Veigl, Juana Suárez et al.•ARTICLE•Synthese•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 114

This paper introduces the reconstitutor as a comprehensive unit of heredity within the context of evolutionary research. A reconstitutor is the structure resulting from a set of relationships between different elements or processes that are actively involved in the recreation of a specific phenotypic variant in each generation regardless of the biomolecular basis of the elements or whether they stand in a continuous line of ancestry. Firstly, we …

  • Technology-driven surrogates and the perils of epistemic misalignment: An analysis in contemporary microbiome science

    Open Access•Juana Suárez, Federico Boem•ARTICLE•Synthese•2022•References: 106

A general view in philosophy of science says that the appropriateness of an object to act as a surrogate depends on the user’s decision to utilize it as such. This paper challenges this claim by examining the role of surrogative reasoning in high-throughput sequencing technologies (technology-driven surrogates) as they are used in contemporary microbiome science. Drawing on this, we argue that, in technology-driven surrogates, knowledge about the…

  • El holobionte/hologenoma como nivel de selección: Una aproximación a la evolución de los consorcios de múltiples especies

    Open Access•Juana Suárez•ARTICLE•THEORIA An International Journal…•2021

The units or levels of selection debate concerns the question of what kind of biological systems are stable enough that part of their evolution is a result of the process of natural selection acting at their level. Traditionally, the debate has concerned at least two different, though related, questions: the question of the level at which interaction with the environment occurs (which entity acts as an interactor), and the question of the level a…

  • Descriptive understanding and prediction in Covid-19 modelling

    Open Access•Johannes Findl, Juana Suárez•ARTICLE•History & Philosophy of the Life…•2021•Cited by: 1

COVID-19 has substantially affected our lives during 2020. Since its beginning, several epidemiological models have been developed to investigate the specific dynamics of the disease. Early COVID-19 epidemiological models were purely statistical, based on a curve-fitting approach, and did not include causal knowledge about the disease. Yet, these models had predictive capacity; thus they were used to ground important political decisions, in virtu…

    Juana Suárez•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The importance of the global co-production market had a considerable impact on Colombia with a significant number of filmmakers working transnationally or residing in other countries. This paper analyses the challenges to the concept of “national cinema” implicit in the work of three filmmakers producing in those conditions: Laura Huertas Millán, Felipe Guerrero, and Camilo Restrepo. Such challenges are translated into their modes of production a…
