The Great Replacement Theory of.in.from.on Leisure Studies
Scholar and Student Wellness while Confronting Violence and Ignorance
As critical scholars of the Far-Right in Canada our work exposes us to acts of violence (both direct and indirect) every day. We are all deeply affected. From different fields (Leisure Studies, Sociology, Anthropology) and different institutions, we have had remarkably similar experiences. As students, we received little or no support to offset the personal impacts of our research programs and had to seek out (or create) our own support networks.…
Trying to talk white male teenagers off the alt-right ledge’ and other impacts of masculinist influencers on teachers
“Are there any other male friendly subs on here?” - online men’s rights groups as simultaneous communities of care and hate, inclusion and exclusion
Online communities provide spaces and places where (almost) anyone can find like-minded others. This is true of many digital leisure spaces and is especially true for men’s rights and other masculinist groups. In these groups, while they are engaged with acts of misogyny and supremacist discourses, some men meet the fundamental need ‘for meaningful social connection, to be part of a group, and to belong’ as well as to ‘“heal” modern alientation.’…
Methodology in Motion
This article reflects upon and provides updates to appnography as a methodology for the study of dating digital app culture. Based on empirical fieldwork and in-depth nterviews with members of the research team, we re-assess and re-map appnography’s original five methodological considerations—digital versus “real,” profiles, space, place, and community, contextualization, and temporality—along two axes: design considerations and user consideratio…
Employee Surveillance Technologies
The pandemic-generated shift to remote work, along with the increasing datafication of work processes, has triggered an unprecedented raise in the use of employee surveillance technologies. Although the literature on worker surveillance and control is rich and multifaceted, it still lacks a clear portrait of these technologies and their prevalence. This paper (a) reviews the academic and grey literatures to document the prevalence of employee sur…
Surveillance, Capitalism, Leisure, and Data
This conceptual paper aims to serve two purposes: 1) introduce theories of surveillance to aid leisure scholars in exploring surveillance in its many forms; and, 2) add to the discussion on surveillance by layering “the leisure body” onto existing theory. We begin by introducing three groupings of “surveillance” theory: panoptic surveillance (think Bentham and Foucault), post-panoptical surveillance (think Deleuze), and contemporary surveillance …
Sailing Away on the SS Academe
Navigating the roles and responsibilities of graduate work is a complex, and often confusing business of workflows, labor (emotional and physical), and moving in several different directions. As graduate students, we find solace and compassion in the words and (mostly) shared experiences of our colleagues, and challenges in the desires, requirements, and “this is your life now” statements of our supervisors and faculty mentors. To be a trainee in…
What’s my score?’
Millions of people around the world use Geo-Social Networking Applications (GSNAs) to connect with new people and potential sexual partners. Using data from a broad study of GSNA users, this paper explores GSNA use by straight men and the implications on their positionality, masculinity, and for their leisure. Straight men showed that although they speak out against traditional masculine norms in their offline lives, on GSNAs they enact and embra…
Are You Sure You Want to View This Community? Exploring the Ethics of Reddit’s Quarantine Practice
In the United States, social media organizations are not legally liable for what users do or say on their platforms and are free to regulate expression in any way they see fit. As a result, dark corners of the Internet have emerged to foster communities whose sole purpose is to create and share content that subjugates members of traditionally marginalized groups. The subreddit,/r/TheRedPill, is one such community. This article explores whether hi…
Displaced Discussion
Reddit.com is a social media site with huge volumes and varieties of content, both hosted on their platform, and imported from other providers. It is also a place of counterpublic community action. Sub-Reddits like r/the_donald, and r/theredpill expound, in turn, alt-right and anti-feminist views. Along with various posts, links, and outside content, the communities support millions of words of user discussion. These communities are policed, at l…
Volunteering as Meaning-Making in the Transition to Retirement
Understanding the volunteer experience of older adults is of critical importance to the nonprofit and voluntary sector, and society. Research suggests that volunteering is a way individuals derive meaning through the complex interactions that make up measures of self-worth, community concept, and identity. This study explores the meaning of volunteering in the lives of adults over the age of 60 as they transition into retirement. Analysis reveale…
Pervasive patriarchal leadership ideology in seasonal residential summer camp staff
Studies on gender and leadership to date reveal that structural, psychological, and attitudinal barriers disadvantage women in the workplace. Women who work in outdoor recreation programs also face gender stereotypes related to the perceived appropriateness of the social role they play, and level of physical ability; stereotypes which cause employees and co-workers alike to prefer male leaders. One area of outdoor recreation that requires further…
