  • The Great Depression (1873-1896) and the Rise of Syrian Arab Nationalism

    Linda Schatkowski Schilcher•ARTICLE•New Perspectives on Turkey•1991•References: 3

Can we see any evidence that the so-called “Great Depression” (c. 1873-1896) had an impact on Syria? This paper investigates the problem by focusing on the Hawran, an important grain-producing area south of the Ottoman provincial capital, Damascus. The Hawran is an open plain, sloping upwards towards the east and nearly enclosed by protecting ravines, valleys and highlands. To the north lies the valley of Wadi ‘Ajam and the well-settled and osten…

  • The Lore and Reality of Middle Eastern Patriarchy

Linda Schatkowski Schilcher•ARTICLE•Die Welt des Islams•1988•Cited by: 2

It is often the history of the most ordinary yet often most meaningful human experiences which are lost in the better-established historical approaches. The study of the relationships of the genders to each other, within the family and familial households and within larger categories of analysis such as social strata and ethnic groupings, can illuminate the history of people in their everyday lives. By doing historical sociology in general and fa…

    Open Access•Linda Schatkowski Schilcher•ARTICLE•International Journal Middle East…•1981•Cited by: 2•References: 9

This paper examines the relatively neglected rural history of Syria. It concentrates on the Hauran, a dry-farming region of hills and plains south of the Damascene oasis between the northern Jordan's tributaries and the eastern desert. Although the Hauran is today no longer a region of primary economic importance to Syria as it once was, it is of historical interest because it was the very first of greater Syria's outlying rural zones to be integ…
