  • Should Terms Such as ‘Bronze Age’ and ‘Iron Age’ be Used in the Context of Middle Nile Valley Archaeology

Open Access•Claudia Näser, Friederike Jesse et al.•ARTICLE•Old World Journal of Ancient…•2025

  • Walking the Line

    Open Access•Claudia Näser•ARTICLE•Old World Journal of Ancient…•2025

This paper explores the justifiability, usefulness and appropriateness of employing the terms ‘Bronze Age’ and ‘Iron Age’ in the context of Middle Nile valley archaeology. It argues that the reluctance to use these terms is linked to the disciplinary isolation of Egyptian archaeology and the singularization of ancient Egypt, and by extension the Middle Nile valley, in the disciplinary discourse of the past two hundred years. It further argues tha…

  • Past, Present, Future

Claudia Näser•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Ancient Nubia•2021

The objects and research fields of the archaeology of Nubia—the topics we pursue, the sources we consult, and the approaches we use in making sense of them—are historically and socially contingent constructs. Present-day knowledge about the Nubian past and the frame within which archaeological practice in the Middle Nile valley operates derive from a history of archaeological interest and work that spans almost two hundred years. They resonate wi…

  • Was the individual buried in MOG012.4 a Christian, a pagan, or both? Evidence for the appropriation of Christianity from a Late Antique-Early Medieval tumulus grave on Mograt Island

  • Dialogues in the making

Claudia Näser, Gemma Tully•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Archaeology…•2019•Cited by: 11•References: 12

In this paper we introduce the Mograt Island Collaborative Project. Launched in 2014, this project aims to share archaeological narratives with members of a local community in Sudan, and with other stakeholders engaged with the area's past, building on a collaborative process which investigates how archaeological outputs can be explored together in a meaningful way. We discuss the wider context in which the project takes place, its individual ste…

  • Exploring attitudes towards the archaeological past

    Open Access•Claudia Näser•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Archaeology•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 43

There is a dearth of studies on intercultural dynamics in Southwest Asian and North African archaeology, not least since conventional narratives assert that present-day majority Muslim communities in these regions are not interested in the pre-Islamic past. In this paper I argue that, despite seemingly overcoming such positions, collaborative projects may actually exacerbate them through perceiving local communities as deficient, in need of being…

  • Shalfak Archaeological Mission (SAM)

Open Access•Claudia Näser, Peter W Becker et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Egyptian Archaeology•2017

This report details the activities of the first field season of the Shalfak Archaeological Mission in April 2017. It presents the framework of the project, the results of the mapping survey, the discoveries in three excavations areas – including a hitherto unidentified Middle Kingdom extra muros storage and/or workshop complex – as well as a reconnaissance of the fortress’s surroundings. The article also includes a short discussion of the find ma…

  • The Loss of Innocence

Cornelia Kleinitz, Claudia Näser•ARTICLE•Conservation and Management of…•2011

During the construction of the Merowe Dam, one of the largest development projects recently completed on the African continent, more than a dozen national and international archaeological salvage missions were active at the Fourth Nile Cataract in northern Sudan. In this context, many of the archaeological missions on the ground found themselves at an impasse between the political and economic interests of different stakeholders. On the one side …
