Dicks, H. (2022). The Biomimicry Revolution
In contrast to the philosophy of technology of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, where it was deemed important to move away from a dominant definition of technology as an imitation of nature, attitudes toward this old idea have again become more receptive in recent decades, and not least within the framework of biomimicry. In a narrow sense, biomimicry refers to a type of engineering that strives to replicate natural objects and processes i…
Between Self-Tracking and Alternative Medicine
While anthropological and social studies of the body have extensively explored self-tracking cultures, they have so far overlooked the phenomenon of biohacking, which represents a distinct though overlapping mode of contemporary techno-asceticism with its own set of norms and frameworks for bodily self-use. This article seeks to address this gap by examining biohacking within the context of self-tracking cultures and its simultaneous alignment wi…
Kylmäaltistus, ruumisnostalgia ja tieteellisyyden spektaakkelit Wim Hof -metodin mediaesityksissä
Kylmäaltistus, suomalaisittain tutummin avantouinti, on noussut kausiluontoiseksi some-ilmiöksi ja kansainvälisesti näkyväksi terapeuttiseksi ruumiintekniikaksi, jota koskevalle tutkimustiedolle on populaaria kysyntää. Tarkastelemme artikkelissa, miten kylmäaltistuksen paikoin jännitteisiä merkityksiä tuotetaan ja artikuloidaan monimediaisessa aineistossamme.Analyysimme keskiössä on somealustoilla suosittu Wim Hof -metodi, jossa kylmäaltistus tuo…

Qualia of Stress and Bodily Enregisterment in Ice Swimming
Combining an ethnographic account of the Finnish national pastime of ice swimming and its remediation through the Wim Hof Method with an analysis of media representations, this article expands linguistic and semiotic anthropological scholarship on the enregisterment of bodily and affective qualia by looking at how practitioners of this therapeutic technology elaborate on their corporeal and semiotic selves and the transformations of those selves …

Folkl…

Cultivating Participation and the Varieties of Reflexivity in Stand-Up Comedy
This article concerns the genre of stand-up comedy as a staged performance of self-presentation constrained by a specific participant structure and an interactional setting that foregrounds both subjective (token-specific) and objective (typifying) presentational orientations. By initially distinguishing between three modes of footing as pragmatically organizing the role configurations of this communicative form, I investigate how this tripartite…
Zeroing in on Performance 2.0
This article explores the notions of performativity and performance in digital environments from the combined perspective of linguistic anthropology and folkloristics. In order to bring these diverging conceptual, methodological, and disciplinary traditions into mutual contact, an intermediary heuristic term of "performative enactments" is introduced. Performative enactments are elaborated as events of communicative sign behavior that foreground …

Performance of Moral Accountability and the Ethics of Satire in Stand-Up Comedy
This paper explores one particular approach to satire in stand-up comedy, a popular cultural genre of oral performance, which is at the intersection of emotion and ethics. It is suggested that morally charged emotional language is particularly situated in stand-up due to the interactionally engaging features of this genre. The argument consists in framing satire as a practice and performance of moral accountability. The analysis explores how the …
