Cultural-Historical Activity Theory and Cultural Community Psychology
Greater commonality for Cultural-Community Psychology (CC) and cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT) is advocated. The potential for greater commonality is exemplified by a series of examples of the many researchers who now use concepts from both CC and CHAT, including our own career work in culture studies, community development, delinquency, and education. A centering whorl of science is observable in the density of intersections across fi…
Resilience and Recovery in American Sāmoa
Case study methodology was used to explore the culturally situated response and recovery efforts following a tsunami in American Sāmoa. Data indicated that cultural mechanisms were effective in meeting physical needs but insufficient to manage the emotional trauma caused by such a large‐scale event. Samoan cultural norms strongly discourage uncontrolled emotional expression outside of ritualized grieving events. Disruptions in social networks and…
Integrating Cultural Community Psychology
Cultural and community psychology share a common emphasis on context, yet their leading journals rarely cite each other's articles. Greater integration of the concepts of culture and community within and across their disciplines would enrich and facilitate the viability of cultural community psychology. The contextual theory of activity settings is proposed as one means to integrate the concepts of culture and community in cultural community psyc…
Beyond Diversity
We are increasingly considering culture as the context of diversity and, in the process, becoming a cultural community psychology. Our recent progress is discussed and a suggestion to accelerate our progress through greater collaboration with cultural psychology 4 is offered. The development of a cultural community psychology has implications for the traditional distinction between basic and applied psychology, our understanding of context, partn…

Firearm deaths among children and youth
Nationally, homicide and suicide are the 2nd and 3rd leading causes of death among children and youth under the age of 21. Sixteen to 19-year-olds now have the highest rate of handgun victimization among all age groups. The firearm suicide rate for White males is over 4 times higher than the rate for African American males, whereas the firearm homicide rate is over 9 times higher for African American males. Almost half of all deaths among African…

Activity settings as the unit of analysis
Theory, methods, and action develop within context, one of which is the intellectual climate of an era. Community psychology is directly and indirectly interactive with many intellectual currents, such as postmodernism, semiotics, hermeneutics, and dialogism. These ideas are discussed as they impact on community psychology, with an emphasis on the reemergence of meaning as a central condition of psychology and community. Meaning is of key importa…
Adult probation adjustment
The purposes of this study were to investigate the variables associated with recidivism and the maintenance of employment among adult probationers. In a 12-month follow-up, three variables were found to be significantly related to recidivism: employment, age at first arrest, and the number of address changes. In addition, the more hours the probationers reported they spent in pool halls, bars, and nightclubs at the beginning of the study, the low…
The buddy system
The relative locus of control of mediator--target pairs was investigated within a contingency management program. As predicted, less improvement in target behaviors occurred for pairs in which the target scored lower in externality than the mediator. In addition, the greater externality of the mediator relative to the assigned target, the less improvement in target behavior (r=-.67). In contrast, improvement in target behavior bore no relationshi…
