  • Association of food insecurity with dietary intakes and nutritional biomarkers among US children, National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011–2016

    Open Access•Shinyoung Jun, R Remo et al.•ARTICLE•Cuadernos del tercer mundo•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 46

Food insecurity was associated with compromised intake of some micronutrients, especially among adolescent girls. These results highlight a need for targeted interventions to improve children's overall diet quality, including the reduction of specific nutrient inadequacies, especially among food-insecure children. This study was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03400436.

  • Weight estimation among multi-racial/ethnic infants and children aged 0–5·9 years in the USA

Open Access•Yeyi Zhu, Ladia M Hernandez et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2019

Objective In resource-constrained facilities or during resuscitation, immediate paediatric weight estimation remains a fundamental challenge. We aimed to develop and validate weight estimation models based on ulna length and forearm width and circumference measured by simple and portable tools; and to compare them against previous methods (advanced paediatric life support (APLS), Theron and Traub–Johnson formulas). Design Cross-sectional analysis…

  • Longer breastfeeding duration reduces the positive relationships among gestational weight gain, birth weight and childhood anthropometrics

Yeyi Zhu, Ladia M Hernandez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 37

BACKGROUND: The relationship between gestational weight gain (GWG) and childhood growth remains controversial. An examination on whether infant feeding practices mediate this relationship may improve our understanding of it. METHODS: We investigated whether the relationships among GWG, birth weight and childhood anthropometrics were mediated through infant feeding practices (breastfeeding duration and age at introduction of solid foods) in a cros…

  • Folic acid supplementation before and during pregnancy in the Newborn Epigenetics STudy (Nest)

Open Access•Cathrine Hoyo, Amy Murtha et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

Fifty-one percent of women reported some FA intake before and 66% during pregnancy, respectively, and more than one in ten women took FA supplements in doses that exceeded the TUL. Caucasian women were more likely to report high FA intake. A study is ongoing to identify possible genetic and non-genotoxic effects of these high doses

  • Pubertal Development in Mexican American Girls

    Open Access•Rosenie Thelus Jean, Melissa L Bondy et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 42

Mexican American (MA) girls are entering puberty earlier than in the past, yet few studies have explored the perceptions surrounding puberty among this group. We conducted separate focus groups for fathers, mothers, and daughters aged 6 to 12 years to explore perceptions of body image, pubertal development, communications, and sources of puberty-related information in MA participants. Our results revealed parental concerns about daughters' weight…

  • Birthplace, Years of Residence in the United States, and Obesity Among Mexican‐American Adults

    Open Access•Carlos H Barcenas, Anna V Wilkinson et al.•ARTICLE•Obesity•2007

Objective: To evaluate the association between birthplace (Mexico or U.S.) and obesity in men and women and to analyze the relationship between duration of U.S. residency and prevalence of obesity in Mexican immigrants. Research Methods and Procedures: We used cross‐sectional data from 7503 adults of Mexican descent residing in Harris County, TX, to evaluate the relationships among BMI, birthplace, and years of residency in the U.S., controlling …

  • The impact of lifestyle characteristics on carotenoid intake in the United States

    Linda Nebeling, L C Nebeling et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1997•Cited by: 6•References: 17

OBJECTIVES: This study compared mean carotenoid intake in the United States by demographic and lifestyle variables to identify potential high-risk subgroups for disease. METHODS: Adults 18 to 99 years of age (n = 22 080) completed a food frequency questionnaire in the 1987 National Health Interview Survey, and mean carotenoid intakes were estimated. RESULTS: Carotenoid intakes were lower among Whites (vs Blacks), current smokers (vs nonsmokers), …

  • Maternal recall of infant feeding events is accurate

    Lenore J Launer, Michele R Forman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1992•Cited by: 9•References: 2

STUDY OBJECTIVE--Retrospective infant feeding data are important to the study of child and adult health patterns. The accuracy of maternal recall of past infant feeding events was examined and specifically the infant's age when breast feeding was stopped and formula feeding and solid foods were introduced. DESIGN AND SETTING--The sample consisted of Bedouin Arab women (n = 318) living in the Negev in Israel who were a part of a larger cohort part…

  • Seasonality of births among Bedouin Arabs residing in the Negev Desert of Israel

Open Access•K Guptill, H Berendes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1990

From 1 January 1981 to 31 December 1982 information on all births to Bedouin Arab women residing in the Negev Desert of Israel showed a previously unreported seasonal pattern. The peak season, November-February, coincided with the period of cool temperatures and the Bedouin Arab cultural seasons of winter and spring. This pattern is different from those of Jewish and Christian groups in the same region, a difference not attributable to religion a…

  • The forty-day rest period and infant feeding practices among Negev Bedouin Arab women in Israel

    Michele R Forman, Gillian L Hundt et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology•1990•Cited by: 6•References: 5

Four hundred and twelve Bedouin Arab women were interviewed within 48 hours of delivering a newborn in 1982 and two months later to examine the effect of social support during the forty-day postpartum rest period on the incidence of exclusive breast feeding at two months. Whereas the distribution of infant feeding practices at two months did not differ among women with and without support during the "forty days," the number of days of help during…

  • Alcohol and body weight in United States adults

    D F Williamson, Donald Williamson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1987•Cited by: 19•References: 30

Alcohol contributes more than 10 per cent of the total caloric intake of adult drinkers in the United States. However, the effect of alcohol on body weight has not been adequately studied in the general population. The association between weight and frequency of alcohol consumption was examined in two national cross-sectional surveys: the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HANESII; n = 10,929) and the Behavioral Risk Factor …

  • Predicting duration of breast feeding in a group of urban primiparae

Natalie Kurinij, Marta L Axelson et al.•ARTICLE•Ecology of Food and Nutrition•1984

Infant‐feeding practices during the first month postpartum, social support, and sociodemographic variables were examined in a group of breast‐feeding primiparae (n=109) to determine which variables were most predictive of a short duration of breast feeding. Thirty‐two percent of the women breast fed for four months or less. They gave as primary reasons for stopping breast feeding return to work, baby rejected the breast, and insufficient milk. Us…
