Stone deterioration at underwater archaeological sites in the Mediterranean Sea
The Mediterranean Sea hosts a remarkable underwater cultural heritage that reflects millennia of in- teraction between people and the sea, preserving evidence of ancient societies, their maritime trades, travels, economies, coastal lifestyles, and technological achievements. Its protection and preservation rely on knowledge of the properties and deterioration of historical materials and their interaction with the marine environment. This study ad…
Shipping olives in the Eastern Mediterranean during Antiquity: Assessing varietal diversity of olive (Olea europaea) from the Mazotos shipwreck (Cyprus, 4th c. BCE) using geometric morphometrics
First study of such a large numerical assemblage of waterlogged olive endocarps dated to the Classical period. • An opportunity to explore table olive in Antiquity. • A main morphotype dominates the olive assemblage under study, together with a secondary type: this composition makes the assemblage from the Mazatos shipwreck distinct from other sites studied, where oil production had already been demonstrated. A shipwreck dated to the 4th c. BCE d…
Self-adaptive colour calibration pipeline for deep underwater image restoration: A reference-based evaluation
Building upon our previous work on underwater (UW) image colour restoration, this paper advances the self-adaptive colour calibration (SACC)pipeline, by introducing a systematic, reference-based quantitative evaluation. UWimagery is notoriously affected by wavelength-dependent light absorption, scattering, and colour attenuation; these factors distort the visual appearance of submerged objects and complicate scientific documentation. Traditional …
Recording Submerged Palaeocoastlines in Cyprus: The Case of the Neolithic Settlement of Paralimni Nissia
This research examines the coastal landscape of the Ceramic Neolithic site of Paralimni Nissia, Cyprus. Based on bathymetric data, geomorphological observations and an underwater survey, five possible palaeocoastlines were identified. Two of them, at –2.0 ± 0.10 m and –5.45 ± 0.25 m, are supported by multiple geomorphological features and are considered the most reliable indicators of past shorelines. When adjusted for estimated tectonic uplift, …

Virtual Sea-Drifting Experiments between the Island of Cyprus and the Surrounding Mainland in the Early Prehistoric Eastern Mediterranean
Seaborne movement underpins frontier research in prehistoric archaeology, including water-crossings in the context of human dispersals, and island colonisation. Yet, it also controls the degree of interaction between locations, which in turn is essential for investigating the properties of maritime networks. The onset of the Holocene (circa 12,000 years ago) is a critical period for understanding the origins of early visitors/inhabitants to the i…
There’s more to a vessel than meets the eye: Organic residue analysis of ‘wine’ containers from shipwrecks and settlements of ancient Cyprus (4th–1st century bce )
Despite growing evidence to the contrary, wine remains the assumed content of many types of ancient pottery. Vessels from the Kyrenia and Mazotos shipwrecks, and Yeronisos island presumed to have contained wine were subjected to three different extraction protocols to test the assumption that these vessels were used to import and serve wine. Chemical extracts reveal grapevine products but also other fruit juice, beeswax and plant oil, sometimes m…
Dating Mediterranean shipwrecks: The Mazotos ship, radiocarbon dating and the need for independent chronological anchors
Studies of ancient Mediterranean trade and economy have made increasing use of sophisticated modelling and network analyses of shipwreck evidence. The dating of most of these wrecks, however, is based solely on assessments of associated ceramic material, especially transport amphorae. The resulting dates are approximate at best, and, as the example of the recently investigated Mazotos ship highlights, sometimes incorrect. Here, the authors descri…

Cutting a Long Story Short: Underwater and Maritime Archaeology in Cyprus
Since the 1960s, underwater archaeological work in Cyprus has been conducted by non-Cypriot teams, although the local archaeological community always acknowledged the importance of the sea in the history of the island. During the last decade, the field has been incorporated in the local academic activity and several underwater projects have been conducted by the University of Cyprus. Moreover, the Department of Antiquities has created conservatio…
Seamen on Land? A Preliminary Analysis of Medieval Ship Graffiti on Cyprus: Graffiti: Analyis of Medieval Ship Graffiti on Cyprus
This article reports on the results of a research project entitled ‘KARAVOI. The Ship Graffiti on the Medieval Monuments of Cyprus: Mapping, Documentation and Digitisation’, during which 233 ship graffiti were recorded in 44 different monuments on the island, dating from the 15th to the 20th centuries. Innovative recording techniques have been used to mitigate the effects of the subjective or partial recording of graffiti lines on tracing paper. …
The 4th-century B.C. shipwreck at Mazotos, Cyprus: New techniques and methodologies in the 3D mapping of shipwreck excavations
Well preserved ancient shipwrecks are rare in the archaeological record, but when discovered, they can \nprovide valuable information on a wide range of research issues if analyzed and documented properly. In \nthis paper we discuss the significance, potential, and constraints of mapping methods applied during the \nunderwater excavation of shipwreck sites with special emphasis on stratigraphy, documentation of finds, \nand reconstruction of site…
The 4th-Century-BC Mazotos Shipwreck, Cyprus: A preliminary report
Since November 2007 an underwater project has been carried out by the Archaeological Research Unit of the University of Cyprus, in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities, at a shipwreck on the south coast, 14 miles south-west of Larnaca. Its cargo consists mainly of Chian amphoras and has been provisionally dated to the 3rd quarter of the 4th century BC. The good state of preservation of the site gives an opportunity for studying amphor…
Questions of trade: The case of the Mazotos Shipwreck
