The effect of different bilingual experiences on attentional control ability
Aims and objectives: Attentional control is an important cognitive ability, and it includes the abilities of attention and inhibitory control. It remains unclear whether a bilingual advantage in attentional control exists and whether different bilingual experiences exert distinct effects on this ability. This study aimed to address these questions. Research Questions: (1) Does bilingual experience enhance attentional control? (2) Do different bil…
What does your accent say about you? The perception of Cuban and Peninsular Spanish varieties by native and non-native speakers of Spanish
Individuals can make judgments on a person's personality and socioeconomic status in as little as 30 s after hearing their voice. This study investigates the perceptions of Cuban and Peninsular Spanish varieties by native Cuban and Peninsular Spanish speakers, second language (L2) Spanish learners, and monolingual English speakers. Specifically, it analyzes whether (i) these speakers differ in their ability to recognize these varieties, and (ii) …
An Investigation of Language-Specific and Orthographic Effects in L2 Arabic geminate production by Advanced Japanese- and English-speaking learners
Research has indicated that second-language learners have difficulty producing geminates accurately. Previous studies have also shown an effect of orthography on second-language speech production. We tested whether the existence of a contrast in the first language phonology for length aids the second-language production of the same contrast. Furthermore, we examined the effect of exposure to orthographic input on geminate consonant production in …
Geminate Attrition in the Speech of Arabic–English Bilinguals Living in Canada
This study has three goals. First, it examines phonological attrition of the Arabic geminate (i.e., long sound)-singleton contrast in the speech of native speakers of Arabic who acquired English after puberty. Second, it compares geminate production in late bilinguals to early bilinguals. Third, it investigates whether universal phonetic/acoustic factors have an effect on the degree of attrition across generations. Participants performed a delaye…
Towards Modeling Second Dialect Speech Learning: The Production of Bogota [s] in Ciudad Bolivar by Speakers of Three Different Varieties of Colombian Spanish
This study investigates the second dialect production of Bogota Spanish /s/ in coda position by speakers of three different varieties of Colombian Spanish, who have been in contact in Ciudad Bolivar, a community located in Bogota, Colombia. The study has three aims. First, it will examine the role of phonetic distance in the acquisition of /s/ production. Second, it will determine the linguistic factors that constrain the realization of /s/ sound…
Language Dominance Modulates the Perception of Spanish Approximants in Late Bilinguals
The ability to discriminate phonetically similar first language (L1) and second language (L2) sounds has significant consequences for achieving target-like proficiency in second-language learners. This study examines the L2 perception of Spanish approximants [β, δ, ɣ] in comparison with their voiced stop counterparts [b, d, g] by adult English-Spanish bilinguals. Of interest is how perceptual effects are modulated by factors related to language d…
Auditory-orthographic integration at the onset of L2 speech acquisition
Recent studies have provided evidence for both a positive and a negative effect of orthography on second language speech learning. However, not much is known about whether orthography can trigger a McGurk-like effect (McGurk & MacDonald, 1976) in second language speech learning. This study examined whether exposure to auditory and orthographic input may lead to a McGurk-like effect in naïve English-speaking participants learning a second language…
A Socio-Phonetic Investigation of Rhotics in Persian
This paper fills in the gap in the literature by providing an acoustic analysis of rhotics in Persian and considers the social variables gender and register. Through the acoustic analysis of 807 tokens, it demonstrates that that there are a number of rhotic variants in Persian in different positions in the word and finds evidence of degemination in coda position, against previous accounts. Furthermore, it suggests that on the one hand, Tehrani-Pe…
