  • Value, rent and platform capitalism

    Open Access•Nick Srnicek•CHAPTER•Work and Labour Relations in…•2021

How is value produced and distributed under conditions of platform capitalism? This chapter attempts an initial answer to these questions by, first, critiquing the dominant 'free labour' thesis posed by the followers of Dallas Smythe and the work of many autonomist Marxists. Second, this chapter proposes an alternative approach based around rent and rentierism, building off of a recent resurgence in interest around these concepts. The consequence…

  • The eyes of the state: How central banks think

    Open Access•Nick Srnicek•ARTICLE•AI & Society•2019

In November 2015, after weeks of bitter political rhetoric and much discussion about the consequences of the proposed changes, the UK Tory government reversed their decision to eliminate tax credits for the poorest. While much was made of this reversal, particularly who deserved responsibility for the change, a more subtle politics was going on behind the scenes. The primary justification for the reversal, given by the Chancellor George Osborne, …

  • The challenges of platform capitalism: Understanding the logic of a new business model

    Open Access•Nick Srnicek•ARTICLE•Juncture•2017

The platform business model is predicated upon a voracious appetite for data that can only be sated by disregard for privacy (and often workers' rights), and constant outward expansion. As they become ever more central to the global economy, Nick Srnicek argues that it's incumbent on us to understand how they function.

'Towards a Fairer Gig Economy' is a small collection of articles examining the social and economic problems associated with the 'gig economy'. The gig economy includes a wide range of labour carried out by workers providing services as couriers, taxi drivers, online freelancers and more. Issues examined include an over-supply of labour, falling wages, long hours and poor working conditions. Each article makes suggestions for how these problems ca…

  • Imaginaires post-travail

Nick Srnicek, Alex Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Multitudes•2016•Cited by: 1

  • Inventing the Future: Postcapitalism and a World Without Work

Nick Srnicek, Alex Williams•BOOK•Inventing the Future•2015

Against the confused understanding of our high-tech world by both the right and the left, this book claims that the emancipatory and future-oriented possibilities of our society can be reclaimed

  • Manifeste accélérationniste

Alex Williams, Nick Srnicek et al.•ARTICLE•Multitudes•2014•Cited by: 3
