  • A Covid19 hosszú távú társadalmi hatásai: Az otthoni munkavégzés esete

  • Determinants of willingness to donate data from social media platforms

    Z Kmetty, Ádám Stefkovics et al.•ARTICLE•Information Communication & Society•2025

Social media data donation through data download packages (DDPs) is a promising new way of collecting individual-level digital trace data with informed consent. Nevertheless, given the novelty of this approach, little is known about whether and how people would share their data with researchers, although this could seriously affect selection bias and thus, the outer validity of the results. To study the determinants of data-sharing and help futur…

  • Social Class and Digital Divide: Analyzing Digital Inequalities on Census and Digital Behavioral Data

Open Access•Kata Számel, Ákos Huszár et al.•ARTICLE•Socius Sociological Research for…•2025•References: 9

The authors analyze the relationship between social class and the various levels of digital inequality, such as Internet access, inequality in digital skills, and online behavior. Two unique databases from Hungary are used. First, digital activity and digital skills are studied on a 10 percent random sample from the 2022 Hungarian census. Second, to analyze online behavior, a donation-based digital behavioral dataset is used, which is linked with…

  • Socioeconomic determinants and reasons for non-acceptance to vaccination recommendations during the 3rd - 5th waves of the Covid-19 pandemic in Hungary

Open Access•Anna Sára Ligeti, Beatrix Oroszi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Although compulsory childhood vaccination coverage is particularly high in Hungary, voluntary adult vaccines, such as the influenza and COVID-19 vaccines, are less well accepted. Vaccine acceptance is heavily affected by the social-demographic characteristics of people. Mistrust and hesitancy about COVID-19 vaccines, if not well managed, can easily affect people's opinion and acceptance of other vaccines as well. Identifying and understanding the…

  • When reality knocks on the door. The effect of conspiracy beliefs on Covid-19 vaccine acceptance and the moderating role of experience with the virus

    Open Access•Ádám Stefkovics, Peter Krekó et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2024•References: 48

Our findings demonstrate that personal or close real-life experience with severe COVID-19 infection can significantly mitigate the impact of conspiracy beliefs on vaccine hesitancy, highlighting the importance of real-life evidence in overcoming misinformation and increasing vaccine uptake. Nevertheless, it is important to mention that our results are preliminary, and future studies need to replicate the findings and test their robustness

  • Splendid Isolation”: The reproduction of music industry inequalities in Spotify’s recommendation system

    Open Access•Tamas Tofalvy, Julia Koltai•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 6

In this article, we argue that offline inequalities, such as core–periphery relations of the music industry, are reproduced by streaming platforms. First, we offer an overview of the reproduction of inequalities and core–periphery dynamics in the music industry. Then we illustrate this through a small-scale network analysis case study of Hungarian metal bands’ connections on Spotify. We show that the primary determinant of a given band’s internat…

  • Exploring the dynamic changes of key concepts of the Hungarian socialist era with natural language processing methods

Open Access•Martina Katalin Szabó, Orsolya Ring et al.•ARTICLE•Historical Methods A Journal of…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 20

The analysis of social discourses from the perspective of historical changes deserves special attention. Such a study could play a key role in revealing social changes and latent narrative of those in power; and understanding the underlying social dynamic in a given period. Until the recent years, such issues were analyzed mainly in a qualitative approach. In our paper we present a new way of revealing/discovering and interpreting social discours…

  • The increasing importance of friends: Changes in core discussion network composition in post-communist Hungary between 1997 – 2015

    Open Access•F Albert, Julia Koltai et al.•ARTICLE•Social Networks•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 19

In order to detect changes in social connectivity, we examined evolutions in the personal network structure by analyzing over-time trends in the composition of the population’s core discussion networks on four cross-sectional, nationally representative surveys between 1997 and 2015, in the era of post-communism, in Hungary. There has been a very significant change; in fact, a reversal of trends regarding the composition of the core discussion net…

  • The impact of Covid-19 on the gender division of childcare work in Hungary

    Open Access•Eva Fodor, Anikó Gregor et al.•ARTICLE•European Societies•2020•Cited by: 30•References: 6

As most other EU countries, Hungary implemented severe lockdown measures during the pandemic, including the closure of the schools and childcare facilities. This meant that for several months a vastly increased volume of childcare had to be supplied by individual households without much institutional help. In the end of May 2020, we conducted a representative survey in Hungary to find out how the pandemic affected the gendered division of these c…

  • Network capital and migration potential

Julia Koltai, Endre Sik et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sociology•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 7

The specialty of our paper, based on the Hungarian survey of ISSP 2017 is that (1) we only focus on a single (the planning) phase of the migration process, (2) we use the concept of network capital, which fits the strategic features of the migration potential phenomenon, (3) we estimate the impact of the size of Ego’s network and that of the respondents’ strong and weak ties on the migration potential separately, and (4) within the strong ties we…

  • Collapse of an online social network: Burning social capital to create it

Open Access•László Lőrincz, Julia Koltai et al.•ARTICLE•Social Networks•2019

The last decade has shown that sometimes even the largest online social networks (OSNs) collapse. Significant cascading mechanisms have been identified in the pattern of abandoning the OSN iWiW at its peak of popularity and after. We set out to examine the key actors who were the first to leave their networks by contrasting explanations based on the structural position of users in the network. Using heterogeneous choice models, we found that a hi…

  • Core Ties Homophily and Sociocultural Divides in Hungary from 1987 to 2015

    Z Kmetty, Julia Koltai et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sociology•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 11

In this article, we focus on the changes of network structures in Hungary, making use of a series of surveys covering a period of nearly 30 years from 1987 to 2015. Using the name-generator network technique, our main focus is on patterns of homophily and social distance with regard to some sociodemographic and resource-type variables. Two methods have been applied: a standard methodology based on crosstab analysis and a more complex approach bas…
