  • Automatic Minds

Open Access•Giuseppe Riva, Brenda K Wiederhold et al.•ARTICLE•Cyberpsychology Behavior and…•2025

The cognitive processes of the hypnotized mind and the computational operations of large language models (LLMs) share deep functional parallels. Both systems generate sophisticated, contextually appropriate behavior through automatic pattern-completion mechanisms operating with limited or unreliable executive oversight. This review examines this convergence across three principles: automaticity, in which responses emerge from associative rather t…

  • Psychomatics—A Multidisciplinary Framework for Understanding Artificial Minds

Open Access•Giuseppe Riva, Fabrizia Mantovani et al.•ARTICLE•Cyberpsychology Behavior and…•2025

Although large language models (LLMs) and other artificial intelligence systems demonstrate cognitive skills similar to humans, such as concept learning and language acquisition, the way they process information fundamentally differs from biological cognition. To better understand these differences, this article introduces Psychomatics, a multidisciplinary framework bridging cognitive science, linguistics, and computer science. It aims to delve d…

  • Searching for the Metaverse

Open Access•Giuseppe Riva, Brenda K Wiederhold et al.•ARTICLE•Cyberpsychology Behavior and…•2024

What distinguishes real-world communities from their online counterparts? Social and cognitive neuroscience research on social networks and collective intentionality will be used in the article to answer this question. Physical communities are born in places. And places engage “we-mode” neurobiological and cognitive processes as behavioral synchrony, shared attention, deliberate attunement, interbrain synchronization, and so on, which create cohe…

  • The Effects of Playing Video Games on Stress, Anxiety, Depression, Loneliness, and Gaming Disorder During the Early Stages of the Covid-19 Pandemic

  • External effective dose from natural radiation for the Umbria region (Italy)

Open Access•Kassandra Giulia Cristina Raptis, Matteo Albéri et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2022

This study presents the map of the external effective annual dose rate (1:200,000 scale) due to terrestrial and cosmic radiation. The terrestrial dose is assessed via gamma ray spectroscopy combining radiometric data from airborne surveys and laboratory measurements. The geostatistical method Collocated CoKriging is used for the spatial interpolation of the sparse gamma ray data, adopting a high-resolution geological map as ancillary information.…

  • Surviving Covid-19

Open Access•Giuseppe Riva, Brenda K Wiederhold et al.•ARTICLE•Cyberpsychology Behavior and…•2021

The persistence of the coronavirus-caused respiratory disease (COVID-19) and the related restrictions to mobility and social interactions are forcing a significant portion of students and workers to reorganize their daily activities to accommodate the needs of distance learning and agile work (smart working). What is the impact of these changes on the bosses/teachers' and workers/students' experience? This article uses recent neuroscience researc…

  • Positive Technology and Covid-19

Open Access•Giuseppe Riva, Fabrizia Mantovani et al.•ARTICLE•Cyberpsychology Behavior and…•2020

The past 10 years have seen the development and maturation of several digital technologies that can have a critical role to enhancement of happiness and psychological well-being. In particular, the past decade has seen the emergence of a new paradigm: "Positive Technology," the scientific and applied approach to the use of technology for improving the quality of our personal experience. In this article we discussed the potential of Positive Techn…

  • Global Storm of Stress-Related Psychopathological Symptoms

Open Access•Claudio Imperatori, Antonios Dakanalis et al.•ARTICLE•Cyberpsychology Behavior and…•2020

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is a global health emergency requiring clinicians to be prepared to cope with the increase in the future incidence of trauma and stress-related psychopathological symptoms. The early detection of psychological distress and timely intervention are strongly recommended. Clinicians should also consider integrating new technologies such as virtual reality (VR) in the treatment of these trauma and stres…

  • Neuroscience of Virtual Reality

Open Access•Giuseppe Riva, Brenda K Wiederhold et al.•ARTICLE•Cyberpsychology Behavior and…•2019

Is virtual reality (VR) already a reality in behavioral health? To answer this question, a meta-review was conducted to assess the meta-analyses and systematic and narrative reviews published in this field in the last twenty-two months. Twenty-five different articles demonstrated the clinical potential of this technology in both the diagnosis and the treatment of mental health disorders: VR compares favorably to existing treatments in anxiety dis…

  • Uranium distribution in the Variscan Basement of Northeastern Sardinia

Open Access•Merita Kaçeli Xhixha, Matteo Albéri et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2016

We present a detailed map of uranium distribution and its uncertainties in the Variscan Basement of Northeastern Sardinia (VBNS) at a scale of 1:100,000. An area of 2100 km 2 was investigated by means of 535 data points obtained from laboratory and in situ gamma-ray spectrometry measurements. These data volume corresponds to the highest sampling density of the European Variscides, aimed at studying the genetic processes of the upper crust potenti…

  • Total natural radioactivity, Veneto (Italy)

Open Access•Virginia Strati, Marica Baldoncini et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2015

We present the first detailed map of the terrestrial natural radioactivity of the Veneto Region (Italy), a 18,264 km2 densely populated area, previously investigated through indoor radon surveys. The activity concentration in 709 representative samples of the main Alpine lithostratigraphic units was measured by using a high-purity germanium (HPGe) γ-ray spectrometer to characterize the radioactivity content of the 41 cartographic units of the Ven…

  • Total natural radioactivity, Tuscany, Italy

Open Access•Ivan Callegari, Gian Pietro Bezzon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2013

In this paper, we report an extensive survey of the natural radioactive content of rocks of the Tuscany Region (Italy): this permitted the first total natural radioactivity map of the region. The sampling was planned using the geological map of Tuscany at scale 1:250,000, which contains 45 distinct geological groups recognized by tectonic and stratigraphic features. Each geological group was characterized for the total activity by measuring the a…

  • The Voice of Emotion in Chinese and Italian Young Adults

    Open Access•Luigi Anolli, Lei Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 45

This article outlines an exploratory comparative study of the vocal expression of emotions in Chinese versus Italian cultures. Given a strong relationship between voice and emotion, it is of special interest to analyze whether and how this connection may covariate with cultural influences in shaping emotions. Forty-eight undergraduates (29 Chinese and 19 Italian) are asked to read aloud short stories inducing different emotions (joy, sadness, ang…

  • Affective Interactions Using Virtual Reality

    Open Access•Giuseppe Riva, Fabrizia Mantovani et al.•ARTICLE•CyberPsychology & Behavior•2007

Many studies showed the ability of movies and imagery techniques to elicit emotions. Nevertheless, it is less clear how to manipulate the content of interactive media to induce specific emotional responses. In particular, this is true for the emerging medium virtual reality (VR), whose main feature is the ability to induce a feeling of "presence" in the computer-generated world experienced by the user. The main goal of this study was to analyze t…
