  • Gender and Animals in History

    Open Access•Swart, Justin B Richardson et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Gender and Animals in History•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 17

This exploratory introductory essay has thought about a gender in humananimal or animal sensitive history. It brings into conversation environmental history, natural sciences (ornithology, primatology), feminist science studies and queer ecocriticism. It explores the ways in which our shifting understandings of animals have contoured our understandings of our own species' gender and sexuality and, vice versa, human heteronormativity and sexism have…

  • Global Shifts and Local Actors

Open Access•Elise Van Nederveen Meerkerk, Corinne Boter et al.•ARTICLE•BMGN - Low Countries Historical…•2023

The location of major textile manufacturing centres has shifted several times over the past 250 years, from Asia to Europe and the us, then back to Asia. Mainstream explanations for these shifts take a macro-approach and hence oversimplify the mechanisms behind them. We investigate these mechanisms at the micro-level of the household to gain a deeper understanding of the relocations of textile production worldwide. We do so by studying Dutch and …

  • Introducing the Historical Gender Equality Index

    Open Access•Selin Dilli, Sarah Carmichael et al.•ARTICLE•Feminist Economics•2018•Cited by: 9•References: 21

Despite recent progress, women are still disadvantaged by their greater domestic labor commitments and impaired access to well-paid jobs; and, in extreme cases, denied the right to live. This has consequences for the well-being of individuals and economic development. Although tools to evaluate country performance in gender equality, especially composite indicators, have been developed since the 1990s, a historical perspective is lacking. This st…

  • Blood is Thicker Than Water

    Open Access•Sarah Carmichael, Auke Rijpma•ARTICLE•Cross-Cultural Research•2017•Cited by: 7•References: 46

This article introduces a new dataset of historical family characteristics based on ethnographic literature. The novelty of the dataset lies in the fact that it is constructed at the level of the ethnic group. To test the possibilities of the dataset, we construct a measure of family constraints on women’s agency from it and explore its correlation to a number of geographical factors

  • Introduction

Sarah Carmichael, Selin Dilli et al.•ARTICLE•Economic History of Developing…•2016•Cited by: 6•References: 12

The family is a universal, perhaps the oldest, institution, present in all societies we know of - from hunter gatherers to the twenty-first-century Internet age - and has shown a great deal of flexibility and resilience over the centuries (Hill 2012). It is the first institution that 'takes care' of us. Families' essential function historically has been to contribute to the basic economic survival of family members (Hill 2012, 1). It is also the …

  • The European Marriage Pattern and Its Measurement

Open Access•Sarah Carmichael, Sarah G Carmichael et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•2016•Cited by: 19•References: 4

We review different interpretations of the European Marriage Pattern (EMP) and explore how they relate to the discussion of the link between the EMP and economic growth. Recently Dennison and Ogilvie have argued that the EMP did not contribute to growth in Early Modern Europe. We argue that the link between the EMP and economic growth is incorrectly conceptualized. Age of marriage is not a good scale for the degree to which countries were charact…

  • Testing Todd and Matching Murdock

    Open Access•Auke Rijpma, Sarah Carmichael•ARTICLE•Economic History of Developing…•2016•Cited by: 16•References: 18

This paper investigates the possibilities for the creation of a global dataset on family and household characteristics. This is done by scrutinizing and comparing two prominent data sources on family system classifications. We first focus on historical data, by comparing Emmanuel Todd's classification of countries by family systems with ethnographic data compiled in George Murdock's Ethnographic Atlas. Qualitative and quantitative tests show that…

  • Marriage and power

    Sarah Carmichael•ARTICLE•The History of the Family•2011•Cited by: 34•References: 11

This paper examines age at first marriage for women and spousal age gap as an indicator for female agency from 1950 to 2005. Using a dataset of 77 LDCs this paper seeks to explore which variables determine differences at a country level in marriage patterns. We look at the influence of urbanisation, education, percentage population of Muslim faith, and family type. We find that education is a key in determining at what age women marry, having as …
