Health and Healthcare Service Use
This study is the first trans-inclusive exploration of the relation between running away from home, health, and access to healthcare and supportive figures as a function of gender among adolescents. Secondary data analysis of the 2013 BC Adolescent Health Survey found that trans adolescents were 4.25 times as likely as males, and 3.0 times as likely as females, to have run away. Logistic regressions indicated that runaway adolescents of all gende…

Health‐Risk Behaviors and Protective Factors Among Adolescents in Rural British Columbia

It is time to mobilize suicide prevention for sexual and gender minorities in Canada
Suicide is a significant health issue among sexual and gender minority adults (SGMA); yet, there are no tailored suicide prevention programs for these marginalized populations in Canada. We hosted two world cafés with community leaders, health professionals, policymakers, and researchers to identify recommendations for mobilizing SGMA-focused suicide prevention programs. We identified five priorities: (1) make society safer for sexual and gender …
Romantic Attraction and Substance Use in 15-Year-Old Adolescents from Eight European Countries
Sexual minority youth are at higher risk of substance use than heterosexual youth. However, most evidence in this area is from North America, and it is unclear whether the findings can be generalized to other cultures and countries. In this investigation, we used data from the 2014 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study to compare substance use in same- and both-gender attracted 15-year-old adolescents from eight European countries…
Love and Dating Patterns for Same‐ and Both‐Gender Attracted Adolescents Across Europe
Sexual orientation is a multidimensional phenomenon, which includes identity, behavior, and attraction. The attraction component, however, is less studied than the other two. In this article, we present the development of a two-item measure to identify adolescents who prefer same- and both-gender partners for love and dating. The questions were administered to nationally representative samples of 15-year-old adolescents in eight European countrie…
Helping Young People Stay Afloat

Mental Health Disparities Among Canadian Transgender Youth
Chasing the rainbow
While the pride rainbow has been part of political and social intervention for decades, few have researched how lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer young people perceive and use the symbol. How do lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer youth who experience greater feelings of isolation and discrimination than heterosexual youth recognise and deploy the symbol? As part of a larger study on supportive lesbian, gay, bisexual, transg…
Divided and disconnected — An examination of youths’ experiences with emotional distress within the context of their everyday lives
This paper is based on a qualitative study conducted in a rural community in British Columbia, Canada. Ethnographic methods were used to: (1) to bring youth voice to the literature on emotional distress; and (2) to capture the ways in which context shapes young peoples' experiences of emotional distress within their everyday lives. Our findings demonstrate how socio-structural contextual factors such as the local economy, geographical segregation…
Living for the moment
The primary cause of death for men under the age of 30 is unintentional injury and, despite health-promotion efforts and programme interventions, male injury and death rates have not decreased in recent years. Drawing on 22 interviews from a study of men, risk and grief, we describe how a risk-related tragedy shaped the participants' understandings of and practices of risk-taking. The findings indicate that most participants did not alter their p…
Psychometric Evaluation of the Six-Item Version of the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure with East Asian Adolescents in Canada
We examined the psychometric properties of scores on a six-item version of the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) among East Asian adolescents in Canada. A series of confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) was conducted for 4,190 East Asians who completed a provincial survey of students in grades 7 through 12. The MEIM measured highly correlated dimensions of ethnic identity (exploration and commitment). Further, multigroup CFA indicated that t…

It's Called “Going Out to Play”
How do Hmong immigrant adolescent girls decide to run away, return home, leave again, or stay home? Video diaries by 11 sexually exploited runaway Hmong girls, ages 13-16, revealed four themes: "fighting restrictions," or resisting family and cultural expectations and desires to be like other American teens; "not running away, going out to play," which captured impulsive decision making; "unrestrained partying," which described runaway experience…
Research on Adolescent Sexual Orientation
The decade between 1998 and 2008 saw rapid increases in research on adolescent sexual orientation development and related health issues, both in quantity and in quality of studies. While much of the research originated in North America, studies from other countries also contributed to emerging understanding of developmental trajectories and social influences on the health of sexual minority adolescents. This paper reviews the body of research fro…
