Socioeconomic Status and Health
Utilization of Norway’s Emergency Wards
Utilization of services is an important indicator for estimating access to healthcare. In Norway, the General Practitioner Scheme, a patient list system, was established in 2001 to enable a stable doctor-patient relationship. Although satisfaction with the system is generally high, people often choose a more accessible but inferior solution for routine care: emergency wards. The aim of the article is to investigate contact patterns in primary hea…
Parental divorce in late adolescence does not seem to increase mental health problems
It seems that parental divorce in late adolescence does not lead to mental health problems in Norway any more, as has been shown before, while such problems may prevail among young adolescents. This does not mean that parental divorce create less problems in late adolescence than before but these youths might have developed adjustment abilities against health effects as divorce have turned to be more common
Proof firm downsizing and diagnosis-specific disability pensioning in Norway
Moderate downsizing is followed by a significant increase in disability pension rates in the following four years, often with complex musculoskeletal and psychiatric diagnoses
Unemployment and disability pension-an 18-year follow-up study of a 40-year-old population in a Norwegian county
Becoming unemployed increased the risk of receiving subsequent disability pension. However, adjusting for baseline health status, health behaviour and education attenuated this impact considerably. The multilevel analysis indicated that a minor, yet statistically significant, proportion of the risk of disability pension can be attributed to the municipality of residence
Chain of care for patients who have attempted suicide
The present study did not find any differences in the risk of fatal and non-fatal suicidal behavior between subjects who received treatment as usual combined with community assistance versus subjects who received only treatment as usual. However, assistance from the community team was mainly offered to attempters who were not receiving sufficient support from treatment as usual and was accepted by 50-60% of those deemed eligible. Thus, obtaining …
Disability Pension Rates Among Immigrants in Norway
Immigrants from low-income countries are more likely than ethnic Norwegians to receive disability pensions. In a previous study in Oslo, we showed that occupational position probably accounted for all of this difference. The present article presents a study of the total population, with data on education and age at receipt of pension. Census and social security data for all persons living in Norway from 1992 to 2003 were used to identify new disa…
Area deprivation and its association with health in a cross-sectional study
We have documented significant associations between area deprivation and health outcomes in Oslo after adjustment for socio-demographic variables in a cross-sectional study. These associations were weakly biased by recent migration. From our results it still appears that migration prior to study conduct may be relevant to investigate even within a relatively short period of time, whereas changes in area deprivation during such a period is of limi…
Inequalities in health
There is a large diversity of self-rated health, prevalence of diabetes and distress among the ethnic Pakistanis and Norwegians. Socio-economic status may partly explain the observed inequalities in health. Uncontrolled variables like genetics, lifestyle factors and psychosocial factors related to migration such as social support, community participation, discrimination, and integration may have contributed to the observed phenomenon. This may un…
Psychosocial factors and distress
Poor social support and economic conditions are important mediators of mental health among immigrants. The public health recommendations/interventions should deal with both the economic conditions and social support system of immigrant communities simultaneously
Physical activity among elderly people in a city population
Study objective: To study the associations between neighbourhood level violence/fear of violence and physical activity among elderly people, accounting for somatic health. Design: Self reported data from the Oslo health study, a cross sectional study conducted in 2000, were linked with sociodemographic and social security data from Statistics Norway. A multilevel regression analysis was conducted by MlwiN using contextual level variables provided…
Contextual effect on mortality of neighbourhood level education explained by earlier life deprivation
value,0.01, ***p value,0.001. Proportion in each neighbourhood with primary education only, lowest quartile of neighbourhoods ranging from 0 to 0.32 and highest from 0.36 to 0.44
Intragenerational mobility and mortality in Oslo
Cumulative deprivation and cause specific mortality. A census based study of life course influences over three decades
Objective: To examine whether increasing cumulative deprivation has an incremental effect on total as well as cause specific mortality. Design: Census data on housing conditions as indicators of deprivation from 1960, 1970, and 1980 were linked to 1990–98 death registrations. Relative indices of inequalities were computed for housing conditions to measure the cumulative impact of differences in social conditions. Participants: 97 381 (71.1%) 30–4…
