  • Meet the local policy workers: Implementation of health promotion guidelines in Denmark

Open Access•Camilla Lawaetz Wimmelmann, Signild Vallgårda et al.•ARTICLE•Public Policy and Administration•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 55

Reporting on an interview and observation-based study in Danish municipalities, this article deals with local policy workers and takes it's departure in the great variation we observed in implementation of centrally issued health promotion guidelines. We present five types of local policy workers, each of whom we found typified a specific way of reasoning and implementing the guidelines. This typology illustrates the diversity found within a grou…

  • The Danish trans-fatty acids ban: Alliances, mental maps and co-production of policies and research

    Signild Vallgårda•ARTICLE•Evidence & Policy•2017

In 2003 an executive order was issued banning industrially produced trans-fatty acids above a low level in food items in Denmark. To date, only a few other countries have followed Denmark’s example. The way health consequences of trans fats were translated by the different actors enabled the creation of alliances between researchers, politicians, administration and industry. Danish researchers interpreted the research in a way to suit their ‘ment…

  • Is the focus on health-related behaviours a new phenomenon

    Open Access•Signild Vallgårda•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•2010•References: 1

In his article ‘Origins of the Problem of Health-related Behaviours: A Genealogical Study’, David Armstrong claims that the idea about ‘changeable behaviour is a relatively recent phenomenon’. In this paper it is argued that this conclusion is not valid. One concern is whether his sources sufficiently document the ideas. Another concern is whether David Armstrong overlooked the focus on health-promoting and health-damaging behaviours by including…

  • Tackling social inequalities in health in the Nordic countries: Targeting a residuum or the whole population

    Signild Vallgårda•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The Nordic countries are often pictured as similar inasmuch as they are egalitarian welfare states with a universal approach to welfare policies. Here, the policies of four Nordic countries towards social inequalities in health are analysed by focusing on how they suggest the inequalities should be tackled. Two types of approach can be identified1: universal policies, which target the whole population, benefits and services being offered to every…

  • Why did the stillbirth rate decline in Denmark after 1940

    Signild Vallgårda, Teruo Ogawa•ARTICLE•Population Studies•2010•References: 28

Stillbirth rates began declining in several industrialized countries simultaneously at the beginning of the 1940s. The reasons for this sudden decline have been discussed ever since. Changes in obstetric care, in risk factors, and in the composition of the population at risk have been suggested. One hypothesis is that it reflects a cohort effect of improved reproductive health status among women born during the first decades of the twentieth cent…

  • Widening the scope, targeting interventions, creating risk groups: Maternal and child health in Denmark and Sweden from 1930s and onwards

    Signild Vallgårda•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2008•References: 12

The subject of this article is the health checks for pregnant women and children in Denmark and Sweden introduced in the 1930s and 1940s. It focuses on how political goals and means have changed up until today. The questions addressed are: Which health issues did the politicians and authorities find relevant to deal with? How should they be dealt with? Who were the interventions targeted towards? It is shown that from the 1970s changes gradually …

  • Health inequalities: Political problematizations in Denmark and Sweden

    Open Access•Signild Vallgårda•ARTICLE•Critical Public Health•2007

Problematisation is a crucial step in any political process. By defining the nature of a problem, pointing to reasons for dealing with it and identifying its causes as well as its possible solutions, problematisation frames an issue as relevant and accessible to political action. Through a study of political documents in the field of public health policies from Denmark and Sweden published during the previous decades, this article analyses the pr…

  • Governing people's lives: Strategies for improving the health of the nations in England, Denmark, Norway and Sweden

    Open Access•Signild Vallgårda•ARTICLE•European Journal of Public Health•2001

Public health strategies reflect governments' wish to make people's lives longer and healthier. This can either be achieved by influencing the frames of people's lives and activities or the way they behave, i.e. to try to 'conduct their conduct'. In this paper the motivations for and methods of four national public health strategies are analysed. They are the English, the Norwegian, the Danish and the Swedish. Four questions are addressed: i) how…

  • The History of Medicine in Denmark

    Signild Vallgårda•ARTICLE•Social History of Medicine•1995•Cited by: 1

Medical history in Denmark has during the last decade received increasing interest from historians and other researchers outside medicine. Three main areas have been investigated: history of medical science and ideas, history of health services, and historical epidemiology. The area is in rapid growth and characterized by a high degree of interdisciplinarity

  • Increased obstetric activity: "A new meaning to "induced labour

    Signild Vallgårda•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1989•References: 10

This study examines the possible reasons for increased obstetric activity in Denmark over the past 25 years. Since 1960 there has been a substantial increase in the average number of hospital admissions (from 10 to 32 per 100 deliveries), in deliveries diagnosed as complicated (from 15 to 49%), and above all in major interventions at delivery (from 4 to 22%). In spite of this increase in activity there is no evidence that the postwar trend of dec…
