Attachment Models and Memory for Conversation
Attachment models were hypothesized to influence interest in an unfamiliar peer's conversational ideas by supplying default expectations for rewards that others provide. Having positive models of others would enhance attention to and memory for the peer's remarks. Undergraduates rated themselves on secure, dismissing, preoccupied, and fearful attachment styles and several weeks later acted as participants or observers in short or long conversatio…
Attachment Style and Memory for Attachment-Related Events
Previous research has demonstrated attachment-schematic processing of attachment-related stories when attachment-related memories are activated before exposure to a story. This study investigated the possibility of obtaining attachment-schematic processing without the activation of attachment-related memories. Undergraduate participants provided attachment style self-ratings and several weeks later read either a positive or negative version of a …
Attachment Memories, Models and Information Processing
Working models of attachment are considered key mediators of responses to attachment-related events, but relatively little research examines their directive influence. In this study we investigated the dynamics of working models by means of a memory paradigm. Participants were tested for attachment orientation and several weeks later read an attachmentrelated story, performed an attachment-unrelated task, and took a cued-recall test about the sto…

Social flexibility and anxious attachment
Social flexibility was predicted to correlate with anxious/ambivalent attachment among individuals reminded of attachment‐related uncertainties. In the experiment reported here, subjects wrote about positive versus negative relationship events and then responded to a series of interpersonal conflict situations. Correlations between their responses and previously obtained attachment style scores provide supportive evidence for the predictions. The…

Women's and Men's Scripts for Interpersonal Conflict
Two studies are reported in which women's and men's mental representations of interpersonal conflict were compared. In the first, exploratory study, undergraduate women and men wrote scripts for a conflict between two friends over broken promises. In the second, they created scripts for five different types of interpersonal conflicts by selecting from among previously written responses that depict alternative beginnings, middles, and ends to each…
Memories of Peer Relations and Styles of Conflict Management
Memories of peer acceptance are investigated among young adults in relation to their imagined styles of conflict management. In an initial pilot study, college students provided accounts of their childhood and adolescent peer relations. They also wrote responses to a series of interpersonal conflict situations. Scales for estimating peer memories and conflict responses were developed from their responses. These instruments were used to test preli…
