  • Road to encounters

Open Access•Timoteo Rivera Jiménez, Marta Díaz-Guardamino et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2026

Although thousands of prehistoric standing stones have been recorded across Iberia, the lack of associated detailed contextual data allows ongoing debate about their possible functions. Following the chance discovery of a ‘diademated’ stela in 2018, excavations at Las Capellanías (Cañaveral de León, Huelva), in south-west Spain, led to the discovery of two more stelae and facilitated the compilation of vital contextual information. Open Access•Miguel A Rogerio Candelera, Alba Fuentes Porto et al.•ARTICLE•Trabajos de Prehistoria•2025

This paper presents multi-disciplinary research undertaken between 2022 and 2024 at El Riscal, the only rock art station known in Seville (Andalusia, Spain), a territory otherwise very rich in Late Prehistoric archaeological remains. Discovered in the 1980s and first published in the early 1990s, El Riscal presents engraved motifs not documented in other parts of southern Spain, where schematic-style painted rock art is prevalent. The set of meth…

Today, mercury is a matter of concern for health and environmental authorities across western countries, and legislation has been passed and programs have been implemented for its total elimination from human activity. But this was not always the case: mercury and its compounds have been highly appreciated and used since remote times all over the world with very diverse purposes ranging from decorative, medicinal, metallurgical and symbolic. Antequera in southern Spain is widely recognised as an outstanding example of the European megalithic phenomenon. One of its most remarkable features is the evident relationship between conspicuous natural formations and human-built monuments. Here, the authors report the results of their investigation of a tomb newly discovered at the site of Piedras Blancas at the foot of La Peña de los Enamorados, a limestone massif that dominates the Antequer…

In this study, total mercury (THg) was analyzed in archaeological human bone from 23 sites dating to between the Middle Neolithic and the Antiquity. A total of 370 individuals from individual or collective burials was sampled, mostly using cortical bone from the humerus. These individuals were recovered from over 50 different funerary structures ranging from tholoi, pits, caves, and hypogea. Although cinnabar (HgS) is a likely cause of mercury po…
